RS Doors and Carpet - SPEAKERS
About to embark on a full RS carpet treatment on my 930 as well as the RSA door panels. I really like ot look of the rear shelf delete although it means getting rid of my speakers back there (which I am unsure about). That would leave me with trying to maximize the performance of my door speakers. According to Bob at AppBiz the pre-set holes are for a 5 1/4" speaker.
What are you guys using? Has anyone that has gone the full rs carpet route figured out anything special in terms of the rears? Thanks guys!

I used the AppBiz RS door panels and what he is saying is correct. There are provisions made for the 5 1/4 speakers.

Thanks... I am more interested in finding out if anyone is running just the 5 1/4": speakers and what brand they found to be the best. I think that removing the rear deck speakers is going to have a huge impact on sound quality.

I have a pair of Cerwin Vegas in my doors, i think they are 6.5" though. I like to be able to hear the radio while tooling around or on long trips. I have considered trying to add a second pair somewhere low key to get better sound quality. Here's a pic when i did the carpet, you can see the passenger door.
Around here speakers are like cup holders, you might get bashed for bringing it up. Paul ![]()

If you really want sound and and RS carpet kit then it seems to me when you carpet the rear shelf you could put some thin board underneath just around the speaker openings and put speakers through them. Maybe find some very fine mesh speaker grills to go voer them rathen than the coarse stock grills.

Generally speaking, the rear shelf speakers in the 911 are less than ideal for sound quality. I would go with high quality door speakers and a small sub in a custom box on the floor in the back. There's a shop in Sacramento that makes boxes for that location in 911s; the owner (Rod) used to post here. The shop name has escaped me.

I have also heard of guys putting a sub/bass type unit up front in the trunk, supposedly it works. I need to pick one up for my SC someday as I just have Infinity door speakers in my RS panels now and I need some bass now for it to sound "ok". I am not into loud thumping systems, but the door speakers alone seem a bit lacking IMHO.

I see that people are using 6 1/2s in place of the stock 5 1/4s in the doors... do these fit in the panel openings?

I would do a little extra work and buy separates... Like this: Infinity Components
and a sub like this: Kenwood to go under passenger seat and buy all gear from Crutchfield.com. Have bought from them in the past... Great instructions and super customer support. I would cut a small hole near the top/front of the door panel to run the tweeter wire through and mount the tweeters there. I would put the sub-box under the passenger seat as some here on the board have done (with this same subwoofer)... Eric

Bob at APPBIZ here,
We recommend that you mount the speakers to the actual door rather than the door panel, then just mount the grill to the panel. This ensures that the weight of the speaker does not stress the panel each time one of your passenger slams the door! It also makes for quick and easy door panel removal should you need to get in there. Remember to always use a plastic membrain between the door and door panel. Moisture and improper speaker mounting are the leading causes of door panel failure. Thank you all for your support and continued patronage Bob |
