SSI's on '74 911

I know that this has been discussed before, but I have a couple of additional modifications already to the car.

I was wondering how much horsepower a '74 911 (2.7) will gain with the addition of SSI's. The car has euro pistons, solex grind cams, and webber 40's. It still has the original exhaust including the original muffler. Also, how much would the old heat exchangers and muffler be worth. All they have on them is a little bit of surface rust which could be cleaned up really easily.

What would be the best bang for the buck...SSI's or a new muffler. Which muffler is best?

Thanks
Paul

Oh, and if you guys are lucky, I will add to the Bonehead mistakes...more like, what the hell was I thinking, or was I thinking at all, list.

Headers would be the best, as most people are retro fitting back to a system that you have....with headers you will lose the heating system. As to a muffler, the two into two sport mufflers work well.

Or you can do a double turbo muffler with 90 degree bends...I did that on my 3.0 in the 914...worked out real nice...see it here at the bottom of the webpage...

Paul,

The only real possibility for gaining any more hp is to go with a sport muffler of the dual-outlet variety! I have never seen any claims or reports of more power with the replacement of '65 thru '74 heat exchangers by SSI's or the lesser expensive headers, such as those from Bursch. The SSI's and your current muffler would probably produce identical power and sound as your factory heat exchangers. The SSI's do look great and they are a quality product, but you are not going to see any signifcant power improvement by switching to them.

Since you asked what would be the most bang for the buck ... that would be a dual-outlet sport muffler such as the AJ-USA unit on your existing heat exchangers! That upgrade will set you back $299 plus shipping, vs $1500+ for the SSI's and Dansk polished stainless steel dual 4" outlet sport muffler, an admittedly gorgeous setup you can see on the cover and inside cover of the latest Performance Products/Automotion catalog! And, the Dansk dual 4" outlet muffler mhas been reported to be very loud!

I guess the choice is between great looks and more power ... or just more power. The sport mufflers are supposed to be worth 10-14 hp.

Thanks to both Mike and Warren that responded.

I thought that changing to SSI's wouldn't gain much, if any horsepower. It would be a little faster heating, I guess, but not worth the trouble. I was thinking of getting a polished stainless steel exhaust, because I like the look of it, but wasn't sure of which one to get. I do have a friend with a 2.7 that has a very nice two in one out exhaust. It roars when she hits the gas pedal. Not that my 911 doesn't roar...it is actually quite loud!

Thanks again,

Paul
