clewett ignition wires

I have an '87 Carrera Targa and had a quick question. I need to replace my ignition wires and of course, the plugs, cap and rotor. I'm a little short on funds at the moment so I can't spring for the Magnecor or OEM wires. I was curious to see what anyone thought of the Clewett ignition wires that Pelican also sells - they are $131.65. will make any sort of difference if I install the clewett ignition wires vs OEM or other higher quality brands??

Beware the Clewett's ability to stay dry on the inside. Search for Clewett's and "wet". If you buy them, be sure they have the fix to prevent them from wicking water into the boots.

Thanks to all of you who replied. It seems that everyone is concerned with the clewetts getting wet. I live in the northeast and the weather is just so unpredictable. Will they not perform well in this climate? SHould I just save up & get the magnacor wires?

I've got the Clewetts and have not had any problems. I wash my car often and do not have the A/C condensor on the deck lid so water gets in there quite a bit. I just run a rag over the whole engine bay after each wash. I have not had any problems. I would use a lot of dielectric grease.

Just remember....

You will get what you pay for. There is a reason that Clewetts are 1/2 the price of OEM.....

I live in Wisconsin. While I avoid rain as much as possible, there have been times I've been caught in the wet for extended periods. Like every time I drive from here to Arkansas it seems, which is twice a year. I've been in some real prolonged soakers and have never had so much as a stumble. Follow the directions, use silicon, and just drive. They're fine.

As far as you get what you pay for, I agree that OEM is the safe way to go. However, in this case, I just can't justify the big gap in price. Especially since I've put so many trouble free miles on my Clewetts.

My targa is an "outside car." I'm not sure it would know what do in a garage. Anyway, I've had Clewett's for something close to a year and haven't had one problem.

in fact, since you are here in the northeast, you know it's been raining for a week now, poured today. I've driven the car every day recently (Jeep needs brakes) and again, no problems.

I bought Beru OEM's on Ebay for $135...The fit and function is perfect as you would expect: but for you visual guys, they lack bling of the colored megnacors.

I ran my Clewett's for about a week and my car died. During my troubleshooting efforts, I found considerable moisture in my #5 boot on the dizzy. Not just damp... but several drips ran out of the boot when I popped it off. I do have the wires with the extra sleeve near the boot ends. I haven't determined if these wires are part of my problem or not. I purchased these wires in Decembere 2006, ran them a week, then my car went into a no start situation and has been out of commision for about a month now. I've been troubleshooting like a madman and noticed considerable moisture in boot #5. Just an observation that you guys may be interested in.

I drove mine in a DE last year with considerable rain. No problems with Clewett.

I should clarify. There is a thread regarding Clewett wires and a moisture problem that several Pelicans had in late 2005. Dave Clewett and Pelican investigated the issue and found that there was a design flaw in the way the heat shield was fitted inside the boots, which allowed moisture to wick inside the connection. The issue was resolved by adding a band around the ends of the heat shield to prevent this, and most have said the fix is sufficient. If your Clewett's are pre-2005, they may not have this fix.

Nope, just bought them from Pelican in Dec 2006. I witnessed a great deal of moisture exiting my #5 wire boot. Maybe I have a defective wire, I don't know. Just my personal observation of wires purchase one month ago from Pelican.

I should clarify...I got mine wet and they were OK, but those were the replacements. I didn't think this problem still existed on the newer wires.

No problems here. I've been using Clewetts on my '85 without a problem....even in very wet conditions.

Just my 2 cents.

Fyrebraid Ignition Wires - $169

I'm sure pelican can get these to you if they are somthing different.
