First Car

Regarding 87 carrera it seems a lot of the cars I have called on have low miles (40-60k) or hi miles but have been rebuilt. It seems most of the cars w/low miles will eventually going to need to be rebuilt. Question is then, do I go with one already rebuilt?

Go with the black one.
Seriously, the most important thing is the prepurchase inspection. Second is the documentation of the repairs and maintance over its life. Just because the engine is rebuilt does not mean it was done properly or that other components are in need or repair. Just my opinion.

As PBS said, get it inspected, ask for all records, get a feel for the personality of the prev. owner. Does he seem like someone who is meticulous and detail oriented, or someone who would not be interested in maintaining his 911, and only cleaned it up to sell it? Find out who rebuilt it and if they do good work or not. I would be more afraid of a lower milage car which was not maintained than a higher one with a good history. Age alone would probably leave several problems with the non-maintained lower mileage car. Don't assume that just because the mileage is low that age has not taken its toll. Best of luck.
Nick.

And to add to that....just because a motor has not been rebuilt recently, does not mean it will need that soon. My car, and engine, has 160k and I'm not worried. The PO apparently took care of it. The service paperwork is very good. And the prepurchase inspection is at least as important.

I would MUCH prefer an older motor to one that has had a recent questionable rebuild. For me, a rebuild would have to be pedigreed.

The funny thing with 911 motors is that sometimes they last only 60000 miles whereas other times they last 200000 miles. When you buy a used 911 you can't really know for sure how long the engine will last. If you're unlucky it might break down after a year. If you're lucky it will last for a long time indeed. Only thing to do is: LOOK FOR SERVICE HISTORY, bills ETC. Have the car inspected by a specialist too.

Mike....
Consider this with any Porsche, especially an older one. The cost of a decent rebuild is over 6K. Thats another car!!!!! It pays to have the compression test during the pre-purchase inspection, which is the BEST 100 bucks you can ever spend. Patience is the practice...so do not get hung up on the pretty new paint or nice leather seats. Take your time and if you have to look at many then be prepared to spend whatit takes for that many pre purchase surveys. The right car will pay off in spades down the road.
Good luck
