23 years later.....old vs. new
What a day....Had a lunch meeting with Pete Stout today and got an opportunity to get a serious ride in a brand new Turbo. Incredible machine! Drove down in my 84 Carrera and it was interesting to see them side by side. The new cars are so much larger and heavier but clearly, they are very refined when compared to my 84. Mine seemed like an antique..
The power was great but the brakes were unbelievable! The handling was shockingly good being so heavy. Porsche clearly has come a long way.....Nice car but at 140k, I'll have to stick to my antique......... ![]() ![]() Pete at the helm..... ![]()

Paul, you're so right. I didn't drive one but had to go to a dealer for a key blank. Saw a Carrera S, (only 100k), that tickled my fancy & yes our PCars do look anitquated,
But get them alone!!!!!! And they are our pride and joys none the less.

Wow. Quite the size difference when seen side by side.

What can you tell me about the seats Interior Fit..? Do you prefer the room you have in your 84 or the new model?

Seats were very firm but held me firmly in place during Pete's demo. Ride was firm to "buckboard" depending on the cockpit setting. Plush ride was never a remote thought. Awesome handling was though....If I had a ton of money, would I buy one? Maybe...... One more thing.....Shifting. Effortless, two fingers was all it took with a throw of about 3" Certainly a far cry from the 915...ha ha

i am alway amazed when i park next to a 996/997 at porsche events in my 75 with flares..... they are HUGE....but compare them to many other sports cars and they are TINY....
and i'll bet you 911's are huge next to an elise.... so its all in the context.

But yeah, the braking in the 996 turbo is unreal - ironically, it's probably the best feeling of the experience. You know when the plane's landing, and they put the brakes on and put the jets in reverse? Imagine that stopping power in a car, available in a split second via the brake pedal. It's awesome.

I agree Paul, being 6-4 I can't really fit in anything new they make either.
On a side note, when I went to buy a key blank as well (ouch, needed some preperation h after that purchase), I saw one of the salesmen that I have briefly spoken with, and he also prefers the driving of the older cars. He said if I wanted to stop by, and drive something he'd let me, as long as he got to drive the 92. Bill |

I drove a 996tt today and it reminded me of driving a Japanese car. The shifter was so light as was the clutch. Turned around, parked the car and drove home in my 996. Looked at my 3.2 Carrera Cab in my garage and just smiled. I won't give that baby up!

I have also had the opportunity to drive a 996 Turbo (somewhat tweaked to around 600hp) on the road as well as the track. Certainly it is a more comfortable ride on the street (although the sheer power of this one seemed out of place on public roads) than my 89. Everything is effortless (clutch, steering, shift) and the AC works! The acceleration, handling and braking on the track was absolutely breathtaking, but for sheer fun my Carrera definitely wins.

That is a BIG fussy ass on the Turbo!
Of course, as a daily beater you canīt go wrong. "Probably the best all around sports car in the world" as Carlsberg would have put it.. Alas, more is not always better from an emotional perspective, as previous posts seem to indicate.

I've only had the pleasure of driving a 930 for a few minutes (kirk911sc's). It's a really great combination of the plain fun-factor of the older cars and the power of the newer. Of course it hasn't got the power of a 996 turbo, but it's got more than enough. And when you couple the power it does have with the lack of (imo) unnecessary refinements, it's all the much more fun. Even though I only had a few blessed minutes with it, it's easily the most fun Porsche I've driven yet.

As an owner of earlier turbo cars, I know Porsche has achieved spectacular engineering feats to bring the cars to todays standards. That being said, I find them rather generic and heavy, even with all the power. As the 996 came into the fold, we started instructing students in these cars. They were so easy to drive; with the power and such, it was scary how fast novice drivers could lap. Then the turbos came in and a friend (and former student ) brought his new X50 to Road America. Suddenly this guy is lapping at speeds reserved for better equipped and qualified drivers. Don't get me wrong, I think the advancments are great; but in the hands of the right drivers.
BTW, how cool to go for a drive with Pete S.!

As far as the size issue as seen from the rear, it would of been interesting to see a Speedster or 550 Spyder along side.
