Sc alternator removals
 

Need help, removed alternator and fan housing today. I cannot separate the alternator from the fan housing? Soaked studs and housing with PB blaster and tried rapping studs with plastic mallet to no avail. What am I missing? :confused:

I think you just need to hit the studs harder. I had the same problem. But I didn't have to hit the studs too hard. You can damage the ends of the studs if you are not careful. I had some difficulty getting the nuts back on during reassembly. To avoid this, consider leaving the nut barely on while you hit the stud so the end of the stud never makes contact with the hammer.

I had the same problem with my alternator removal from the fan housing. I noticed two studs were not centered in the housing holes, so some careful side tapping with rubber mallet on the studs got the alignment back. Keep using the PB Blaster, especially at the alternator base inside the housing. Eventually I was able to use the weight of the alternator to separate itself while vigorously shaking the housing. It just fell out onto a blanket I had placed on the floor.

The real tight fit is where the alternator ring fits in to the body of the housing, Kake sure to douse this seam with PB blaster, tap this area with a brass drift and work your way around. I believe JohnWalker does a drop on to a board from a couple of feet to get these separated...a search on his posts should turn up his method

Imagine you have a muffin tin with all of the muffins stuck. You turn it over and tap the far edge on the counter, and they all fall out. Same thing here. Put a couple of rags or towels down on your work bench. On the far side of them, away from you, put a 2x4 or 4x4. Flip the housing over in the direction the fan/alternator wants to fall out (fan side down), hold the housing on the side closest to you, and rap the other side of the housing's lip on the board. You might have to turn it around and do it a couple ot times. It will fall right out, just like those sticky muffins.
