What is the better motor?
I can buy a 3.0 or a 3.2 for about the same price. Both are in good condition.
The 3.0 seems like it is the easier option, since there is no DME, wiring, sensors, etc to futz with. However, I realize that all those electronics make tuning much easier. I am no genius and by no means a real mechanic, but if it was up to me I'd put the 3.2, just because it's got more grunt.

My 3.0 is right up there in the "UMPH" category.. Sent a few 3.2 owner's back to the garage for better chips... Now if I could just get that damned timing and idle thing worked out!!!

The 3 liter will require wiring mods, as it uses a pointless ignition which will require a different ignition module. Given that, and all other things being equal the 3.2 will be much easier to tune and live with. The mods are really not that bad. Do use SSI's, do use Motronic.

There is no replacement for displacement. If the electronics bother you trash them and go for a simple set of Webers.

And I seriously doubt any 3.0 would be sending my 3.2 back to the garage for much these days...especially light to light. She's doing a 6.18 0-60 measured Before I put the weltmeister chip in. Be carefuf what you say Kurt, there are some hot 3.0 liter motors stuffed in some early cars that will send you back to the garage looking for new paint, let alone a chip! Come up to Cambria next spring and see some of the R Gruppe "Hot Rods" .

Fellas, fellas, fellas, I was after which motor is eaier to build, most cost effective to build and keep running etc. Not WHO is bigger than WHO. Chips do not help Noramlly aspirated cars much anyway... Heck, I got a 657 rear wheel horsepower car (street legal) I'll put up to anyone's chipped anything. Muhahaha

YOur intrested in the motors. OK they are two different motors. Same bore different stroke, same valve sizes different port sizes. One will rev quicker and the big one has less bottom end torque but with the bigger ports works better on top end. What do you want and how much do you want to spend, if your going to keep them both stock buy the bigger motor, In fact buy the bigger motor if you are going to build it also. Parts for the 3.3 are the same as 3.0 so start with the big one.

Sorry VIPRKLR, didn't mean to get the guys off on a tangent... It depends on the HP of the 3.0 your looking at. The SC's had 175 - 190 depending on the year and state they went to. My 3.0 came stock with 200 HP befor the fun and games began. Check things out for yourself.. Good Luck!!

Both are good motors but each have known problems. The 3.0 is known for lower head studs breaking. The 3.2 is known for having
valve guides go bad. I guess if I had to choose I would go with the 3.2 it is easier to fix valve guide problems. Joe A |

Hell a 66K 3.2 motor out of a totalled 84 Turbo Look for $5.5K. Pinch me! If VIPRKLR does not move on this engine, there has got to be a line behind him (check last week's
Pelican 911 for sale ads). I have heard the engine and it is sweet. The owner of the engine/car is a straight shooter. Dave bought the car for the Turbo suspension and brakes for his race car project. In contrast, last month VIPRKLR tried to sell me a 2.7 without its CIS FI or the distributor for $5K! Now for the question, CIS is far easier to transplant but Motronic is more modern, tuneable and efficent. More wiring challenges with the 3.2 motor. It depends on whether you want to pay a wrench to do the transplant or you do it yourself. Local Denver shops want a couple grand for either transplant. I think a guy could do it by himself and his buds with the right diagrams and some Internet assistance. Steve Timmons in Delaware would be someone I would tap into (Check Rennlist for his email address). Timmons has performed this swap several times I think. Bill 72T->S |

LOL - the slamms never stop. I sold the 2.7 for the $5K asking price to a shop in Boulder that had the money and considered the deal to be very good.
The 3.2 is $6.5K by the way, not $5.5K |

I believe the 3.0 to be a better all around motor. Typically you will see longevity in the 3.0. I have seen plenty 3.2's that require a rebuild at 140k. On the other hand, I like the motronic injection. If you are willing to spend the time and money, there is a compromise! Just my 2 cents worth...

My mistake VIPRKLR about the 3.2 price.
It is still asking a "fair" price for a 3.2 with all the components. My earlier post's perspective was all wrong based on my fading memory of the price. I am sorry. Glad you got $5K for your short block 2.7 motor. However, do check out Timmons, he has a members website on Rennlist. The 3.2 is a better way to go but CIS is far easier to transplant.
