A tale of two tails...

I just replaced my whale tail and deck lid with a 964 lid and tail. I also went to a fiberglass rear bumper. I got it all together this afternoon. And yes I have the tail wired to a switch so it will operate. Also the 911 R lights which I really
like. They are even brighter than stock. Talking about a diet...

Before

After

I am going to get a Ruf yellowbird type bumper for the front and 964 side rockers. The mission is to lose all the rubber on the outside of the car.

I never really liked the impact stuff, so off it goes.

Not so sure about the R lights and the C2 tail. Maybe it's the reflector that's throwing me. It's just a new look for me to get used to.

I did want to ask if you read all the threads on installing the C2 tail. (You must have read some to figure out the hinges.) Is there a way to wire the thing so that it deploys automatically as it did on the original car?

No I don't think anyone has come up with a wiring scheme for that Milt. Truthfully though I think it is better with a switch. You only deploy it when you need to. I really don't see the need it going up and down every especially in traffic.

I thought about doing a panel instead of the reflector but since the car is red I think it looks fine as is.
I sort of look at these cars as a blank slate that you can finish off to your taste. The best part is nothing is really permanent.
You can always change it again later.

Do you happen to still have your euro rear tails? Care to sell them? If so, let me know... either reply here or PM me.

BTW, I think it looks great!

Later,
Mike

Thanks guys for the compliments. I know the look may not be for everyone but it is what I like. I should have done a bit of a write up about it with some pics because it is not totally obvious how to attach the bumper once you have removed the bumper shocks.

I also made a heat shield for the muffler from aluminum sheet metal.

The whole thing weighs less than one of the bumper shocks. If you want to lose some weight, this is the place to lose it.

Mike, I have already sold the tail light lenses and the housings.

Are you running some aluminum bracing under the fiberglass?

Ron, yes I fabbed up a brace from flat stock aluminum that is 1/2" X 4" underneath. If I remove the bumper for any reason I will post some pics of the work.

Those with an electronic speedo might want to try the speed switch function of the LM2917 IC described in this thread:

$1.49 LM2917 IC does tachometer, MFI Speed Switch, rev limiter, or shift light ...

Here is the datasheet and application note:

http://cache.national.com/ds/LM/LM2907.pdf

http://www.national.com/an/AN/AN-162.pdf

The LM2917 could be driven off the input to the speedometer, and would function as an automatic relay to switch when the car's speed is above, say, 20 - 30 mph.

You may find out, as have others, that the tail in the deployed position will help lower your engine temps.......

I, for one, think it looks great. I'd be interested in seeing pictures of the work you did on the bumper.
