Machine shop / engine rebuilder for Mg case engines?

Posting for a friend.

Friend has a 1971 911T with 2.2L Mag case engine. He's thinking of a freshening-up rebuild and is having a hard time to find someone remotely close to him to do the rebuild. Apparently , machining Mg cases is an issue during the interview process. Friend lives in Buffalo, NY area.

Any leads / help on who could do this...and is good ??

Shipping is common, easy and CHEAP compared to the cost of machining done wrong to a Mag case. Therei s NO substitute for this work being done right by experienced people.

Use Competition Engineering in Lake Isabella, CA. Call Walt, your friend won't regret it. He does stuff from all over the world.

And after waiting two years for CE to clear their backlog, your friend will have bought a 924.

Rebuilding a magnesium case engine, particularly a 2R 911T case like the one in question, can be simple or can be difficult, depending on the engine's history. A 7R 2,7 case that has had a hard and difficult life in Southern California may warp like a potato chip when you open it, whereas a low-stress "T" may only need bearings. It all depends.

I don't know anyone good upstate, because that's not where the market is on the East Coast. The market is in the NYC Metro Area, New Jersey and Western Connecticut, and that's where the shops are.

If it were an "RS" engine and your friend had a $20,000 budget I would send him to the undisputed master of Porsche mechanical restorations on the East Coast, Jim Newton at Automobile Associates of Canton, CT. However, Jim is overkill for that job.

So I STRONGLY recommend that your friend call Dan Jacobs in Oxford, CT, telephone (Tel. (203) 262-0569. Dan is an excellent, honest, straightforward and reasonably priced guy who does a great job.

Peter Dawe (and he's up north, also).

Peter Dawe is in Stroudsburg, PA, which is on I-80 just west of the New Jersey Border. He's the best RACE mechanic on the East Coast.
