Oil pressure switch remove and not replace

I just bumped into Indy's best Porsche Mechanic, 36 years experience. He recommends that when I pull the engine to replace all the leaking gaskets that I remove the oil pressure switch and just plug the hole with a bolt and loctite gasket #815. He mentioned that this switch fails often and creates a geiser of an oil leak from the main oil gallery. The switch is set to make the dash light come on at 2 psi. At 2 psi the engine is toast anyway so what use is the idiot light? The dash has oil pressure and oil capacity so why the idiot light as well?

His advice seams reasonable, considering the trouble caused by this switch and the unnessary information the switch provides.

What do those on this list think?

Michael

you don't need an idiot light if you watch your oil pressure gauge RELIGIOUSLY.

Porsche Crest

For what the switch costs, I'd change it and have peace of mind. Just my 2 cents worth.

Good luck, Mike

Mine failed a while back and it was relatively easy to replace and not expensive. I vote for keeping it. Especially at the track it is hard (impossible) to watch the pressure gauge all the time - an idiot light on the other hand is easily noticed. Just my opionion.

Pelican sells one that is adjustable. Here it is in the catalog.
You can set it to come on at at a higher pressure, therefore actually giving you some time to stop before serious engine damage is done.

I'd go with replacing the switch if for nothing more than keeping all warning/safety devices intact, regardless of their effectivness. This could be important to a future buyer of your car also.
