Oil level sender ground

Howdy all,

A quick question. The oil level indicator on my 73 911E is no longer working. After looking at the tank from inside the passenger wheel well, I noticed one of the two wires that lead to and from the sending unit is cut. My assumption is that it must be a ground wire, however I cannot locate the source of this wire. I therefore am unable to splice it. I looked briefly at the wiring diagrams and can see one of the wires leads to the gauge itself but cannot for the life of me figure out where the other leads to. If any of you out there have a 73 car and can just peek in the wheel well, could you please give me an idea as to where each of the 2 wires actually go so I can at least search for the other end of the severed wire. On top of everything, the gasket to the sender is leaking and a nice oily gunk has accumulated in that portion of the well, making it rather difficult to follow the direction of the wires. Any help and suggestions are welcome.

Regards,

Bruno

I have an '86 911 and I'm 99% sure those wires from the oil tank go to the wire harness for the right rear light assembly. From there the harness plugs into a receptacle in the right side engine compartment near the back.

Bruno,

There should be a ground wire (brown) coming out of the wiring loom of the right rear tail light. The signal wire (green-white) is also wired into this loom. Previous owners may have arranged different solutions though (this was the case on my car.) You can find the electrical diagram on http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/911_Parts/911_electrical_diagrams.htm The oil level sender is in the bottom right corner of part 2 (number58). In part 1 on the same location the right tail light is depicted. NR 85 is the multi connector which goes into the engine bay.

If you remove your tail light assembly it should be easy to find the correct wire.

Good Luck

Peter

Peter and Kiwior,

Thanks for the prompt reply's, after looking more closely at the electrical diagrams it has become evident that the ground leads to the tail light. I will dismantle and check it out. I am sure I'll find the problem there.
When repaired, I'll post my thank yous ...

Bruno
