Race Bug v. Carrera RS

http://www.germanlook.com/Html/Features/Feature06June2003.htm

who do you think would win?

Depends on how long the race is ...

Bug has almost 800 lb advantage and about the same power.

If the bug was one of those '73 cabrio mid-engine Artz autobahn 'stealth' tuner conversions with the RS 2.7 engine and trans ... it might be more fair race, and length of track might not be a factor, either! The Artz VW cabrio was spotted by an Autoweek reporter ... passing AMGs and 911s on the Autobahn!!!

I remember reading the article.

It looks like the owner probably put as much or more money into the bug then the Porsche.

The bug may have been a hair faster then the 911 but which car do you think will travel more miles before a rebuild and ans is more pratical for daily driving?

They should have compared the bug to a true "race" Porsche.

I'd say it depends on the type of racetrack. Drag race the bug would likely stomp on the Porsche. Tight, lower speed racetrack the bug should also win. High speed racetrack, the Porsche should win.

That bug has so many Porsche 911 and 944 components (transmission w/ LSD, brakes, alternator & fant, suspension pieces) that it isn't a simple Porsche to VW comparison. I wouldn't be surprised if the two cars cost almost the same to produce.

It didn't surprise me that the bug beat the 911. There are many in the VW crowd who will go to incredible effort and expense modifying their cars to the point that the only thing stock VW remaining is the body shell. A buddy has a 2 liter NA bug that will do 11 seconds in the quarter mile. That's faster than many exotics, but his bug doesn't corner for squat (set up for drag racing only).

Cal Look VWs were big when I was growing up. I had a Karmann Ghia with a modestly modified engine that surprised many V8s from 0 to 70 mph.

I love the bug, but I'd rather have the 911.

fun read none the least.
Had a cal. bug in my youth and a pure stock 74 now.
both would be fun.
