Will 195/65-15 Fit An Early Car?

Ok my 69 912 is almost done getting it's new paint. The tires on it are in REALLY bad shape and I need somthing to replace them with.

The car has the factory steel wheels. I'm not sure how wide they are? I think I once heard 4.5"?

But anyways it has 185/70-15s on it right now. But I can't find this size anywhere. Plus I would like to go with a little wider tire anyways.

The thing is on front I only have about 1/2" of clearance between the tires sidewall and the front shocks. So I have to be very careful not to get a tire to wide.

But on the back of the car I have a little bit of room to work with because the car has some sort of aftermarket flares (not sure what style).

So I was wondering if a 195/65-15 would fit up front without any problems on the stock wheels.

And whats the widest size I could safely run on the back with the stock steel wheels?

Thanks,
Dustin

Your wheels 'should' be 5.5" wide, but 6", steel chromed or Fuchs, were optional and would fit ... and there is no possible way even the largest 195/65 or 195/60 should be wide enough to cause a problem with that 1/2" clearance you have now! With some tire brands, like Pirelli, that tend to be narrower than others for a given size, 205/60VR-15 might fit all around without problems!

I do not know if your 69' has the same early ball joints and struts as my 66'; if it does you can still use 15 by 6 fuchs on the front along with 3/8 in spacers. If you do not use spacers and have the early struts the wheels will rub on the strut! 205's will fit, but 195's will give you more crearance and alow you to lower the car more.

Well the car has been lowered but I don't know how much. I am just going to stick with the stock wheels for now.

And probably 195/65-15s all around unless i can find somthing a little bigger for the back that would be almost exactly the same height as a 195/65
