3.0 Emission Fixes
I am once again about to embark on the Georgia emissions test, which is now going from "every other" year to "every" year starting in January. The previous owner removed the air pump and has capped the injectors, additionally I noticed last night that he also removed the oxygen sensor from the manifold and it has a nice blob of weld in the hole (chances are it will take some work to restore the fitting). My question is this.... Are many of you still utilizing the air pump? I know the car passed emissions here the last couple of times as the tuning was quite expensive. Should I restore this system or save the power and keep de-tuning and tuning around the problem? Any comments or assistance would be appreciated.

Do you know what the levels are that you need to pass? The levels that I had to pass in Minnesota were actually quite high and I easily passed with a 79SC ROW that had no emissions equipment (the blower has been removed). The one time that I didn't pass, my mechanic was able to set the mixture using an exhaust gas analyzer to acceptable levels, cost was $30.
Also, a 78SC never had an oxygen sensor. That wasn't added until '80. ------------------ Bill Krause '79 911SC Euro |

I'd get the car all warmed up, and I mean ALL warmed up and go to the testing station. If you fail most states give you a reinspection free. if you do fail, go to the nearest P-mechanic with an exaust gas analyzer "sniffer," and have him lean the mixture. I predict you'll pass.
Then, go back to the P-mechanic and complaint it's too lean - see if he's willing to richen it back up a bit using the sniffer, particularly if your car has no catalytic converter. ------------------ '83 SC |

I had no idea that the oxygen sensor was in a Porsche of '78 vintage; can anyone confirm this for me? My '78 sc Targa has no such item, and has the air pump removed and the pipe capped.

Jdub -- No O2 Sensor in a 78 or 79 SC. K-lambda systems (with O2 sensor) were installed in 80-83 (USA).

Just like superman said. Mine failed last year in Atlanta, so I took it to Ryland Specialized Import Service near Dobbins Air Reserve Base where he leaned it out until it passed. There is an emissions testing station on Hwy 41 about 1 mile from Ryland's shop. You can get a free recheck(if you fail) if you go to the same place for the recheck.

I'm in Atl, and my 78 SC passed just fine without the air pump.(this was before i put the fuel/ign setup on it) As stated earlier, there is a fine adjustment on the fuel dist. (actually the sensor plate). Should be no problem if your engine is mechanically ok.

I'll give it a try. I assumed the plugged port was for an o2 sensor. There are 6 injection ports one to each cylinder which are all capped and seem to have a ball bearing in each one. The welded port on the exhaust manifold is on the pipe which crosses between the two heat exchangers, offset slightly to the right when viewed from the rear of the car looking toward the front.
My first inclination is to have the test done and see where it falls in the specs. If I get lucky maybe it will pass. If it does I think I need to go visit my old mechanic. Thanks for the help. ------------------ 78 911SC |
