Did you dump your cat. and install a test pipe?

Hey folks:

Several outfits sell a "test" pipe that replaces the catalytic converter. My '78 sc Targa is due for a valve job, and since I hear tell that the cat. needs to come off to accomplish this, I am ready to store the cat. and bolt on this test pipe.

Can anyone tell me what the test pipe is composed of? Was it easy to install? Fit OK? Did you try to pass emissions with the pipe on? Did you reset your mixture after fitting the pipe or is this not needed?

My apologies for the endless questions, but I need to know that I can install it (illegal to do so in Wash. state), and that it will perform at least as well as the car currently does. I am due for the valve job and wouldn't mind resetting the mixture at the same time.

Your comments MUCH appreciated!!!

John

I don't know how strict the emmissions rules are in your state, but you can remove the Cat, and punch out the honecomb insides. Then replace the Cat and it's just like a test pipe. That way the emmissions test site thinks you have a fully functional Cat and you pass the visual inspection part.
