Firewall Sound Pad

In a current thread, someone is asking the age-old question about the engine compartment sound pad. Mine is removed and I don't miss it for a second.

I'm thinking I will also remove the thick, heavy pad behind/underneath the rear deck. Anybody want to warn me about the problems? Does the rear deck still fit after the insulation pad thingie is gone?

Bump. I just need someone to either encourage me.....or discourage me. Actually, I'm hoping for encouragement. I want to get rid of that insulation pad between the firewall and the rear deck upholstery. Is there any problem doing this that someone would like to warn me about? Like....if the rear deck upholstery will no longer fit properly (of course, this can be fixed with a lightweight, removable insulation pad).

I don't think that you will have problems...my only concern is that you may will have more heat inside coming from the engine...!

Unless you are going for max weight savings, I would leave it in place.
If you remove the rear pad, your car will feel like your driving a tin can. You will have to put a vibration dampener on at a minimum in my opinion.
If removed, I don't think you'd have a problem fitting the upholstered rear shelf. It is a pretty rigid piece. What level of noise can you live with will be your issue.

When I did my RS interior I painted on a few coats of quiet coat and added a lightweight sound material to the rear shelf. With a cat bypass and factory single in/out muffler, the interior noise is on the edge for a street car...for me anyway. I had a M&K single in/out muffler for a short time but it was too loud for me.

when i took mine out i found it to be damp and the rear seats rusting out. this is due to a leak in the rear window seal. i do think the pad soaks up the water and promotes the rust. the pad is surprisingly heavy. i think getting rid of it, cleaning the sheetmetal good and replacing it with dynamat would be the best thing.

This is part of the problem. My rear window leaks also.

Don, my threshold of noise is higher than yours. I have two-in two-out Triad exhaust which is pretty wonderful sounding, and it'll be better if I can make it louder. I'm also about to put the solid motor mounts back in.

Thanks guys.
