Tell me about superchargers
I'd like to know what there is available on this subject and hear from someone who is using a system like this on a relatively stock motor. Who was it that made the ram air I read about a while ago? I'd like to go over that subject again after reading the post below from partyparty.

The only manyfacturer that I have dealt with for our application is SOK (Supercharging of Knoxville). They offer a centrifugal (Paxton) unit for $5K and a Whipplecharger for $7K. Installation is for both SCs and Carrera 3.2 cars. Both units will give you 260 rear wheel horsepower on a stock 3.0L SC. Can't say about the Carrera.

I put up a post a few weeks back concerning anyone with practical experiences with SOK and benefits/drawbacks with performance/reliability.
It seems that a Turbo may be cheaper and more upgradeable but then again who would want more than 400BHP with a Whipple turbo on a Carrera. The main advantage a Supercharger has over a Turbo is lack of 'Lag. I Would LOVE to hear 1st hand experience of someone who has actually done the Supercharger conversion but until proven otherwise, believe it is a myth! ![]() rgds Ben [This message has been edited by 86ragtop (edited 12-15-2000).] |

I've told the story a few times of my fellow PCAer who supercharged his SC with both Paxton and Whipplecharger units. Both installations put 260hp to the rear wheels, BUT the dyno charts looked very different. The whipple unit was on boost immediately, the Paxton unit had a curve that looked a lot like what you would expect from a turbo. To the credit of the Paxton - the "laggy" curve is probably easier on the tranny. The owner of this car raced it around the country and thrashed it very hard. It has sense been sold to another member who is much nicer to the car. The key to longevity seems to be leaving the boost knob alone. After our PCA mechanic locked down the boost the car had no more engine troubles. I drove this car and went on numerous rides. It is quite quick, but not scary fast. Quarter mile times were in the 12's.
