Cleaning Oil Cooler?
I have the engine out (82SC) to fix an oil leak at the oil cooler seals. Oil and crud have collected on the cooler and in the cooling fins. Any suggestions on how to clean the cooler from this crud? I've used brake cleaner and compressed air. Still not as good as I'd like. Do you all use a parts cleaner of a dip? I have the oil cooler openings covered but still a little nervous about debris getting inside the unit. Thanks,

Bruce,
May work or not, but I cleaned an oil cooler between the fins with a flat bicycle spoke, the aerodynamic type. I cut the threads, and the flat part fits exactly between the cooling fins. I cleaned a BEHR aluminum front oil cooler from a '71 2.2 S that way, after trying many others without success. I hope this helps, GeorgeK |

I used brake cleaner (by the gallon), soaked it for about 2 days, then scrubbed the crap out of it with a long bristled brush to loosen things, then blew it out with air. This sounds like what you are doing, but maybe the soaking makes the difference, since mine came very clean. Best of luck.

On a similar note, is there some process you can use to clean the inside of a cooler. can you have them cleaned like you can with a radiator? Any way to test if the cooler is partially plugged? Thanks for any opinions.
