Remote starter
Is it possible to hook up a remote starter to a 911? It looks like this would make it easier to test compression, set timing, etc.

It is possible if you can find the yellow #50 ignition lead somewhere in you engine compartment with the help of a good wiring diagram.

Mine actually came with a "remote" starter. I originally thought it came with all Porsches, but I guess not. It's a little push button starter that is on the black plastic cover in the left of the engine compartment where the fuses and the CD box are. If you need anything I can take a look at mine and see how it's hooked up.

Jeff,
I assume someone drilled a hole in your CD cover and added the button? I'd loved to know how its wired up if you've got the time. Do you ever use it? ------------------ Greg 72 911S |

Jeff,
I would also like to know how your remote starter is wired. I have one but have not tried to use it yet on my P car. Having one that convenient would be great. Thanks. Steve 76 911 Targa |

Greg and Steve,
the remote starter comes in real handy, checking for spark, setting the timing, all that good stuff. I have used it a lot. I've got two midterms today and two tomorrow and a hectic weekend, but will do my best to get a look at it and let you guys know ASAP. ------------------ Jeff 1976 911S |

While replacing my thermo-time switch, I came up with an easy way to hook up a remote starter.
I attached an adapter to the "G" connector of the thermo-time switch, which allows you to hook up two spade connectors instead of one. These adapters are available at Radio Shack. They have one 1/4" female spade connector and two 1/4" male connectors in various configurations. I got a 14 guage wire with a female spade connector on one end and a male on the other. Hooked the male up to the thermo-time switch. Attached the wire to the existing wiring harness with plastic ties. The male connector is covered by a red rubber cover that I took off an old aligator clip. This connector just lies on top the last 14-pin multiconnector. The red cover keeps it well insulated from anything else. When you need to hook up a remote starter, just slide back the red cover, hook one lead to the male connector and one lead to the right side of fuse #3. Works like a charm. And if need to remove it you can just cut all the plastic ties and remove it and the spade adapter. No permanent modifications. ------------------ Greg 72 911S |
