transmission bearing howl
I have a 901 transmission that shifts great but creates a loud bearing/howl noise, especially when I let off the gas and let the transmission slow the car. Obviously, this needs fixing. Is there any reason why I shouldn't get a full tranny rebuild while paying for the labor to remove the engine/tranny?
Thanks, David |

No. Rebuild it. (Sorry I'm so long winded)

Sounds like a pretty righteous diagnosis to me, but you want to be very sure this is yoru problem before you go rebuilding trannies to solve it.
Having said that, you're probably right about the noise cause. And no, it would not make sense to replace tranny bearings and not deal with synchros. ------------------ '83 SC |

I once had a 1959 vw bug that I drove from Kansas City to somewhere up in Iowa.I only noticed because the shifter got so hot that I could not put my hand on it.I stoped at a service station and had it topped off and I went on my merry way to the west coast and back and still drove it two more years.

David,
I own a 84 911 cab and I have been experiencing the same noise too. The trans shifts very smooth and when I let off the gas that noise appears. I have about 59,000 miles on my trans. As I look at it, if the trans if shifting without any problems, just keep driving it. The bearing noise can be a number of things, but I will keep driving.. Save your money for a rainy day... Good luck !! Pat |
