Giving up - S dust cover install

Hi all, I'm very annoyed with the installation of the dust covers for the S calipers. I have now ordered and wrecked 2 sets.... I have a/the Ate set (with vulcanized ring in the cover). I can only conclude that tolerances must be off somehow or this is not for me. I tried freezing, heating, c-clamps, jar lids, patience whatever.

I'm about to give up on using these covers and would like to know if there are alternatives to the ones with the vulkanized ring. Isn't there a cover that uses a seperate rubber and ring that expands when installed in the rubber?

Eagerly awaiting your suggestions/help!!

Thanks

Dennis

Dennis,

Are you using Dow Corning Silicone grease on the bore and seal???

Jar lid topped off with 3/8" - 1/2" hardwood load spreader to ease the pressure on the lid, which MUST only press on seal at outer periphery, yet be smaller than ID of the seal bore ... pressed in place with 'C-Clamp' style Vise-Grip pliers -- small pair, not the huge ones.

The surface of the seal retension bore must be pristeen, and 100 % of the downward leading edge of the seal must be coated with silicone grease and be bur-free!

Hi Warren,

yes used plenty of that grease. And build a load spreader device and checked the bore condition.

Pls tell me there are other dust covers that have a different design?

Thanks

Dennis

I'm actually thinking of cutting the ring with a small Dremel disk, creating a ring with slightly smaller diameter. Maybe it will still have sufficient 'spring' in it to keep the dust cover in place...

Dennis,

Some people will sell you the wrong seal ... the one for M or A calipers ... no chance of those ever working!

I think the problem is a bur or nick in the entrance to the bore for the seal ... never had this problem with an 'S' caliper!
