Question Oil Fill with 1 gallon containers

I have a dumb question.

I have decided to switch my motor oil to Delo 400 and it comes in 1 gallon containers. How do you pour it into the engine?
Do you do it directly from the container? Do you use a funnel? or ??

Inquiring minds want to know.

TIA

If it is in a container that has a spout or shape that allows you to pour it directly into the oil tank without spilling it, do that.

If not, use a funnel.

Next!

I used a deep black funnel that I bought at an auto store. But there is an even better one I bought from walmart that has a lid on both ends to keep the inside clean for next time, plus there are markings to help you measure out one quart. There is even an on off "switch". 2 1/2 gallons was about 9.5 quarts. You can google "metric conversion" for a website on the calculation.

Sounds like "Brother" Harry visited Costco recently,...

Like the other good folks have suggested; a nice long funnel, suitably modified, works really well here.

Thanks Steve.

I figured I needed to change my oil brand after reading some of the threads on the changes of anti-wear additives.

If you are putting oil in a 964, and use it from a gallon jug Pour slowly!!!!!!!! It's easy it over flow because the oil tank is in front of the wheel. And the oil has to make it's way though a hose to get there. In a pre 89 just use a long funnel

I buy my Castrol 20w50 in 1 gal containers and I have a long funnel that I use. No problems to fill without making a mess...

Since adding oil is such as long process (when using the 1 gallon or especially the 5 quart containers), I always fill up my kitchen sink with hot water prior to beginning the process. I place the containers in this hot water to lessen the viscosity so that it flows in faster (as the funnel I use has a very narrow neck). I periodically drain a portion out of the sink and repenish it from boiling water from the kettle. By the time my car is ready to accept the new oil it flows in at a faster rate. This procedure works well for me.

On my last trip to the local Walmart for my usual 4 gallon jugs of Delo 400 to change the oil in my 7.3 PSD, I was shocked to find a new product replacing it--Delo 400 LE (for Low Emissions) on the shelf. Does this mean that Chevron is also reformulating their HD oil to lower zinc and phosphorus content? I bought Shell Rotella instead.

ps- I use a funnel on the Porsche, Harry...

I've read Shell Rotella will also be reducing ZDDP content in 2007. Still, Rotella and Delo should have ZDDP levels above the other api approved oils for gasoline powered engines.

Tom,

Seems a funnel is the consensus.

Thanks for info. I took a look at the Delo Web page (https://www.cbest.chevron.com/msdsServer/controller?module=com.chevron.lubes.msds.bus.BusPD SList) for the LE product and found this data sheet: https://www.cbest.chevron.com/generated/MSDS/PDS29828886.PDF. IT shows:

Phosphorus, wt % 0.12
Sulfur, wt % 0.32
Zinc, wt % 0.13

The "old" Delo (https://www.cbest.chevron.com/generated/MSDS/PDS7668628.PDF) shows:

Sulfated Ash, wt % 1.41
Phosphorus, wt % 0.136
Zinc, wt % 0.148
