s/s heat exchangers upgrade results
Well, I got the new heat exchangers and dual outlet sport muffler on
today.....wooohoooo..... The seat of the butt dynometer registers the claimed 20HP increase (WAG) and a lot smoother acceleration from 2,000 rpms on up. For those not in the know, you have to replace and reroute two oil lines not one. The exhaust tone is awesome when the foot is buried in the accelerator. In fifth gear on the freeway with the top down, it is not much louder than the stock muffler....well worth the $800 buck investment. Thanks to Pelican for pointing out that two oil lines needed to be changed, good pricing and for shipping so quickly. The were very good to me despite having my order taken by that strange phone salesman named Wayne....8^) Michael Zois Santa Barbara CA PI# 18892 REA# 05214 '83 Cabriolet, euro |

What exhaust did you end up going with? Was it single or dual outlet. If you don't mind, what was the total price and hours or labor. I have to factor this in for the spring. Thanks

I advertised in the usual places, rennlist, here and in the recycler. Got three answers and picked the one with the best price. Compared well to Pomona Porsche swap meet prices and did not have to drive down there.
The used boxes and muffler ran me about $675 with the oil lines and gaskets an extra $125.00 from Pelican. About 4 hours labor. The oil line on the thermostat was a ***** and I had to modify one of the air injectors that got in the way of the new boxes.... The muffler is a "sport" type, resembling a banana style 911 single port exhaust. The stock exit was welded up and two ports were added to exit side by side under the license plate. It reminds me of the GT style exhaust on the racing 914/6 that Hurley Haywood drove. I had to remove the rear valance and I am debating as to whether to find another and cut that for the new outlets. Looks pretty good w/o it. |

Mike,
I too am planning on doing this upgrade, and live in California. Did you retain the services of the cat? And will this set up that you put on pass the California smog test? Thanks, Makaio 78 911 SC |

I have retained the services of the cat, but it is no connected to the existing system. The smog meter shows me in compliance without it, when visual inspection is needed, I will have it for a short curtain call. Then on back to status quo....

Mike-I am happy that you are pleased with what I sold you.The factory muffler is responsible for the great sound.Aftermarket mufflers just don't make the same music.
