I agree, but look at the bright side. He sold me his engine and I'm rebuilding it to an RS spec.

See, two good things came out of it - an on-the-road Porsche (albiet with a Mitsu engine...shudder) and an RS-spec engine. Rock on.

Mack, you're not really gonna put gas and oil into that work of art are you? It would make a nice center piece on my living room table.

It may be sacrilege, but you can't argue with the quarter mile times. Just what is it that this "prick" is supposed to get? That you need to spend $10K or so in upgrades to make the stock Porsche engine perform as well? At least applaud the engineering. It's his car and his money.

Mack,
Is that a standard yoke on an engine stand?
I didnt know that they mate with 911 engines. Let me know if you did any machining on the yoke to make it fit.
Thanks.

Standard engine yolks will fit but you can't split the case with them.

You got it rarly. That motor he put in although a 4 banger puts out around 400Hp. If it blows up he can pick up another one for around 500 bucks. Surely unconventional and I personaly wouldn't do it but; sure does make economic sense.
Yes that is a conventional yoke. You just must file down some the tube parts that go over the studs so they will fit flush with the case. Also two of the tube spacers need to be shortened as two of my studs any way were shorter. You can split the cases.

When someone puts in a SBC its considered terrible because its a heavy old tech piece of crap. Now someone puts in a light small displacement 16V turbo modern tech piece of crap and your still not happy. Come on guys make up your minds

I have a danish book about cars from 1967 till today. The book lists all the popular models of that period. Under each car are plusses and minusses. Under the 911 it says:
+The history
+It has a soul (which will be lost if you replace the engine, in my opinion)
+It can go really fast

-An expensive one is not necessarily a good one
-High running costs
-Tricky on the limit handling

So it seems we don't drive 911s only for the performance! Therefore performance is not an excuse for replacing the engine with a Mitsu or Chevy engine. I'm not telling everyone who own hybrids that they're crazy, I just say that I find it wrong. On the other hand it might get me a cheap Ferrari F40! I have this old Saab 900 Turbo engine which might fit if I.....

There is no "right" or "wrong". These are CARS, nothing more or less. The only thing the Porsche crest does for you is hike up all the prices of parts and give you bragging rights that you have a "Porsha" Wooooo.
They are really cool looking, lightweight cars that just need a little more in the shorts for a lot less money. Yes - the car will most definitely lose its soul if that cool sounding motor is taken out. But it will gain another soul - that of a brutal beast. If this is what the owner wants then aplaud the bravery and ingenuity it takes to do something like that. We can't all be wealthy enough to modify Porshe engines, so are we not allowed ultra high performance P-cars because of it? If all types of cars were left stock it would be a truly boring world that only a beaurocrat could love.

agreed!

many people are surprised to know that those IMSA GTP Porsche 962s didn't have Porsche engines in them... they had ANDIAL engines in them. is ANDIAL the same company as Porsche? NO! does Andial use Porsche components to build their engines? YES!

here's some data from their web page:
Some of ANDIAL’s Major Racing Accomplishments Include:

· The 24-hours of Daytona, saw ANDIAL engines in the winner's circle from 1983 through 1987 and again in 1989. A note of interest: In 1987, the first through fifth place finishers were in ANDIAL cars.

· The IMSA Supercar Series Championship in 1992.

· IMSA-GT Championships in 83, 85, 86, and 87, North American GT-1 Endurance Cup Championship in 1994 and GTS-2 in 1996.

· SCCA World Challenge – USA in 1994.

· Class wins Pikes Peak in 1994, 96, 97, and 98.

not bad for an american-made (they basically rebuilt the 962 engines top to bottom) engine in an american made aluminum matrix frame (like Fabcar), using american, british, and german-made parts with a Porsche badge on the hood... and the overall victory going to the German manufacturer.

the whole thing reminds me of high end audio..

what's the difference between:
"a pair of speakers on a stereo"
and
"a set of monitors connected to a hi-fi"...

i didn't pay $6000 to have them get called "speakers".

more power to the guy. if he has the mechanical knowledge and the time, then go for it!

obin
