voltage reg

Does a '84 911 have an internal VR or external? Can it be replaced by itself or must I get a whole new alternator with VR?

Thanks

I believe it has a internal VR. My '85 does.
Someone else on this board found that the solder connections on the VR tend to break. Check the VRs solder connections and resolder as this may be your problem.
My alt. would "pulse" did this for a long time until I fried a battery and a stereo amp. I bought a rebuilt unit and evrything was fine. I later found out my symptom was a definitive sign for a bad solder joint.

Good luck
Nick
