Tranny now in pieces
Review: 86 911 coupe.Would not go in 4th gear. Shift lever would not travel as far in 4th as in 2nd and reverse. Some synchro noise is 1st & 3rd when driven aggressively. Adjusted clutch cable and linkages so that 4th gear works but still not right.
Update: Now dismantled. Gears still on shafts Very minimal amounts of metal on drain. No visible signs of wear on forks. All look straight and fit nicely in grooves. No end play. No visible evidence that forks have moved on the shaft. No visible signs of wear on any bearings. No galling or discoloration, but I didn't expect any as there was no noise. Close inspection with magnifying glass shows all visible teeth with sharp points and edges. No visible wear. No teeth missing No visible bends or cracks in any shafts. 1st to 2nd and back requires no pressure. Very easy slide. Very little tension. Two fingers. Slider is very stable, but can be wobbled out of center/perpendicular alignment with no trouble. Fork will hold in position. 5th/rev requires some greater tension and pressure to actuate, but minimal. 3rd to 4th requires both hands to engage and is balky. Wriggling, wobbling, and slider movement is required. Hard to engage, but not impossible. Does not appear to engage as deeply as other gears. Slider is no different from 1st/2nd. 4th to 3rd is not as straight forward and easy as 1st/2nd, but engages with no difficulty and no wobbling required. Pressing down on synchros through the square holes feels about the same for all gears. Hubs are next. Is that enough information? I found a tranny guy with 37 years of experience. Hundreds of VWs and dozens of Porsches. He remembers his first 901 tranny in the sixties. He shows me every little thing he's done and describes what he is looking for. He MADE me look at the teeth with a magnifying glass. A craftsman. He expressed admiration for the Porsche quality and handled these parts differently than the Mitsu gearbox on the adjacent tray. He chunked the Mitsu parts back on the tray with obvious disdain. None of the Porsche parts were chunked in that fashion. $275.00 labor. I buy the parts. He smokes cigars and might appreciate another import... say about 90 miles south of Miami. They are out there. Keep looking. I talked to no less than 20 shops and mechanics.
