Oil change question....
I know the car should be running when you check the oil.
When I take of the oil cap it stalls... I assume it is causing a huge vacum leak.. the car is a 1986 carrera 3.2 Thanks for any help Bruce |

Our cars' idles drop when we remove the oil tank cap. But they don't stall.

Superman,
Thanks for the reply. I'll try to up the RPM with the throttle linkage and see if that makes a difference. Bruce |

Your Idle should be set at 800 RPM's and when you take the oil cap off it should drop 100-200 RPM's I think.

When my car was still on the road (now on jackstands) and I checked my oil, I don't remember the idle going down. Is this a problem? Thanks!

The idle goes down when you remove the oil cap, because you cause a large vacuum leak. There is a hose that runs between the oil tank near the filler tube to the air boot.
This is how the oil goes from the oil tank into the intake when you overfill your oil. Your car should drop several hundred RPMs, and it will idle rough, but it shouldn't die. Adjusting the idle might work, but if it doesn't, then you should check your mixture setting. If your mixture is too lean to begin with, then opening the oil cap might make it too lean to idle at any RPM. ------------------ Bill Krause '79 911SC Euro |

I think you must have another vacuum leak. My '85 also drops idle when the oil-filler is opened. I think you already have another vacuum leak and therefore it dies when open the vacuum leak even more.
Good luck. Nick |

Thanks for the replies.
I will check for a vacuum leak, I think I might have one. I hear a whistle when it's running, but haven't been able to find it yet. The PO put on a K&N filter, I also have the original airbox, I might try that if I cannot find the leak. Bruce |

Whistling IS a sign of an air leak (I apologize for shouting), and air leaks are bad. Vacuum leaks I mean. Find it and fix it. Then make sure the ignition system is working perfectly, and finally reset the mixture.
