Wheel offsets
The post about the spacers below got me thinking (Look out!). My Fuchs on my 70T are a certain shape. They say 6Jx15 on the back. My buddy's also say 6Jx15 but his are different (68 911). His spokes are at a level such that they are higher than the rims. Mine set back from rim level about an inch. I figure mine will poke out wider in relation to the hubs, but then I have the more flared fenders. Is it just the matter of the car's years? I'm sure neither of them came stock with these wheels. What's the story on this?

Yes, the early, or 'deep' spoke design Fuchs, were intended for tube-type tires and do not have the USA safety-hump to retain the bead on tubeless tires. Around 1969, with the 6' x 15" Fuchs being standard on 911S, there were both versions in production, and confusion reigns, to say the least!!! Your wheels, as you described, are the same ones that came on my car in '73!
According to the chart on page 215 of Bruce's 2nd ed. Handbook, the stated offset for both versions of the 6 x 15 Fuchs is 36 mm. On the inside of your wheels, the part number should be 911.361.020.10, while your friend's should be 901.361.012.06 ... I hope this eases some of your concerns! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |
