1976 911 VIN decipher
I have a friend who's looking for a couple of good quality Pre- 78 Targas on the East Coast to take with him back to his home in Europe.
He's found one but has the following question: "I am looking at 1976 911, I went on carfacts, but they don’t seem to recognize the serial number. 9116212014, engine serial number 6462168. Any suggestions?" Thanks, Hank

Hank,
Serial numbers were more or less standardized world-wide in 1981, when they implemented a 17 digit format. Carfax only works for these later numbers. For earlier cars, you're on your own.. JR |

VIN# 9116212014; engine #6462168
911= 911 6 = 1976 2 = 911S/US 2.7 1 = Targa 2014 = sequential serial number 6462168 646 denotes 2.7 liter 165 hp engine your best method of inspection is through pre-purchase inspection for mechanical and body condition. That may involve two shops, but if you post the location of the cars, you may get suggestions/recommendation for reputable shops for both. IMHO, much better than carfax anyway.
