1st Snow...no heater!
Well, the first snowfall of the year in Eastern Pa and the blower motor(s) in my 86 911 decide to quit. I can live without the heat for awhile but no defrost makes it rough. I have the automatic heat control and I can hear it working and there is heat seeping into the cabin but no blowers. I checked all fuses and they look good. Has anyone had the relay go bad? Does this power all blowers including the footwell ones? I really hope I don't have to dig into that auto heat controll contraption...I've been in there once to fix a cable and it was not fun. Any help is appreciated..Thanks

Check the fuse in engine compartment. It is the center fuse on my 83. Mine was not blown, but the ends were corroded. Replace with a new fuse and see if motor works.

I replaced one of the fuses (I think the top one) in the engine compartment because it was corroded but the others look ok. I think I'll replace them all anyway just in case. I should say that the blower in the engine compartment made some noises here and there over the past few months, but nothing alarming. Also, if it was shot, I would think the others would still work?

The footwell blowers in my '87 will not work if the motor in the engine compartment is not working. You can try to replace the fuse(s), but if that doesn't work, take a closer look at the blower motor in the engine compt. You stated that it was making some noises. That's usually what it does before the thing tears itself apart and dies :-)
Removal is pretty easy, and you can just hook it up to another source to test it. Replacement is $200+new, or about $100 used. Sometimes they can be rebuilt... sometimes not. Dan Tolley 1987 911 Coupe |

Mine did not work either and it was recommended I get electrical contact cleaner. I sprayed the hell out of the blower switch (upper slide through the slot) moving the switch agressiveley back and forth while I sprayed into the slot to clean the contacts. The fan works fine now except in the "high" fan position. A few mechanics told me that the blowers are tough but the switch is prone to contact corrosion.
Good luck. BR '73T |
