CCR Crankshaft Grinding - Armando

Has anyone used this outfit in Redwood City.
I have an SC crank that suffered one rod bearing
damage. I spoke with a gentleman who said if it's
not to bad they may be able repair it or swap me
for another one.

Would I be Better off just buying a new one?

The rod appears to have gotten very hot and is discolored.
Some areas have turned black. Can I buy just one new/used
rod or will I need to buy a new set of them as well?

Also I noticed some very small pitting on one of the cam lobe edges. How critical is this?

Let me hear your experiences.

Thanks K.T.

I have met Armando and he did excellent work for me. He is an expert. Like many other machinists I have used, it is important to communicate expectations regarding costs and timing very clearly.

I have heard that the hardening process used on the cranks is not permitted in the United States. Therefore, it is not permissible to make these rod journals as hard as the factory did. Most of the guys I know who understand Porsches recommend getting a good used one rather than trying to recondition a damaged one. Pitted cam lobes are not uncommon. This too should be fixed, but the hardening challenge is not as critical. There are plenty of qualified cam grinders.

Tenifer is the European process Porsche used for nitride hardening of steel forgings ... cranks, 'S' rods, etc.

Tuftride is the comparable USA hardening process, thus licensing is most likely the big issue against Tenifer process usage in the USA! Chrysler always used Tuftriding on the premium components in its' hotrods of the '60s:
