Are Fuch alloys matt or satin black?
I have 3 6jx16 black centered fuch's & 1 red one.
In painting the red one do I want satin or matt black? The wheels I want to match are the fuch fronts from an 79-80 SC. I intend to just lightly key the red & then spray the black on top of it. If anyone knows any different please speak up. I'm assuming the black will cover the red easily. Thanks, JG |

You might want to paint all four for homogeneity purposes. My impression is that they are a satin. I've seen some glossier ones (repainted) but I like the satin better.
I may repait mine as the black is a little tired but the anodized rims are in good shape. I'll probably 'rattle can' them using good paint. Satin. ------------------ '83 SC |

I have been thinking about repainting mine as well but I wonder if spray paint will hold up on the wheels after being cleaned of brake dust, etc. a few times? Has anybody had experience either way?

I have redone all four of my 6x15 alloys and used Satin paint. I would absolutely do all four of them. The difference is worth the time. The most time consuming part of the process is taping off the wheels before you paint. I would suggest either going to a body shop and getting a thin tape that pros use, or use electrical tape. You'll find that the electrical tape will bend the corners because of its ability to stretch. You will save time and get a much nicer result than if you use a non-stretch masking tape. I used some stuff called blue magic to clean off the rest of the wheel.
If you are not a great painter you may want to get the feel of it by doing your spare first. I have had no durability problems with any of my wheels. |

Wurth Matte Black is a perfect match for the factory paint (and in fact may actually be the factory paint, I think it is).

I used Krylon satin, and it looks great 2 years after the paintjob. Not bad for a rattle can.

Thanks Guys,
Satin it is then, & yes thinking about it spraying all 4 is probably best. Spent a day thinking about what to mask the rim with, as pointed out normal masking tape doesn't bend. I thought of using bathroom mastic type sealant and then picking it off afterwards. I'll give electrical insulation tape a go first. Good advice, thanks. |

Just to finish off the thread.
Electrical insulation tape is perfect for masking around the centres. Use satin black paint. Paint all 4. I did one & it made the remaining 3 which were fine, look terrible. Take your time (as always). It took a full day spraying & one night for prep. I found it easiest to mask the edge with wide masking tape radially out from the centre placing lots of tape edge to edge. First attempt with a newspaper mask probably used more tape to hold the paper in place! The results are actually very good, just from a rattle can. Thanks for all your advice, JG |

Actually one more thing to add.
It doesn't take much more effort to prep. & spray the back of the wheel too. It really makes a difference, you don't realise how much of the inside you see through the cut outs. Again I had to do this on the red wheel anyhow. It probably adds an hour to the job, well worth the effort. |
