Triple Header Project

Got carried away, looking for projects to help the winter months pass by. Decided to replace seized front blower motor (almost used my trusty fire extinguisher on that one), front hood shocks and worn out carpet in our 1978 911SC. Here are some before and after pics. Note the broomstick, before the shocks were replaced.

The old carpet and shocks:

Cheers.

Nice. Looks brand new. I like the Porsche decal on the carpet.

that's a very nice carpet set!
where did you get it?

Hawks911 03-01-2007 05:58 PM

Got the carpet set from Terry O'Guin (togx on this site). Was very pleased with the results. He was great to deal with. His address is togx@austin.rr.com. The blower and heavy duty struts were purchased from our host. The struts were an easy swap and are much better than using a broom stick!

Thanks, Mike -- you got a real good camera -- that's the best pix I've seen of the black version of my carpet -- most of my pix of the black seems to make the details just merge into a big blur.

When you refer to the "heavy duty struts" I assume you're referring to the mini-"shock"-struts that hold up the hood? If so, FYI, whenever I would fix the that problem on my Porsches I wouldn't bother to replace them, I just added a second one on each side. I did this by replacing the bolt with a longer one and then adding extra nuts in the middle as spacers on the bolt so that the extra strut wouldn't rub. So, in regards to that solution, my carpet's pockets for the struts are actually a bit extra wide to allow for this (just in case anyone wonders why they are actually a little roomier than necessary).

Regards,
Terry

Was the old blower motor bad?

Also, I'd bet that somebody has made a better, quieter blower motor since the 1970s....

Real Nice! I lost my carpet a long time ago...

Wow! Looks great!

Randy,

The old fresh air blower had seized on a test run on the car after I had just rebuilt the rear blower motor. I was driving along with the heat on to test the rear motor when I thought things smelled funky. Must be the old lines getting hot air for the first time in years. Then smoke started drifting through the front windshield vents. I pulled over quickly and had the extinguisher in hand, ready to spray! I waited a minute, turned the front blower off and re-started the car and no more smoke.

When I pulled the blower motor, I saw that one of the brushes had seized. Ordered a new motor from our host and it was relatively easy to replace.

Working fine now and now the old one is on standby for parts, if required.

Thx - sorry to hear about the blower - they aren't cheap.

BTW, what material are the hoses made from?? - yours look brand new.

Hawks911 03-02-2007 07:51 PM

randy,

They're original. Just cleaned them up with a little goop hand cleaner and hot water. Rubbed a little Armour All for the shine.

Thats all.

Mike
