Source for M5 x 105 alternator through bolts
As I have noted several others have done here in the past, I managed to mess up the long skinny bolts that tie the front and back of the alternator together while I was removing it from the fan shroud. I have measured these bolts, and they are M5x105mm. This is on a 1987 Carrera, the measurements could be different for different types of alternators from other model years.
Does anyone have an internet source or other source I could call to get these bolts? I have tried locally by calling alternator/generator shops but have struck out. Google searches on that size of bolt have only yielded some part sheets for parts for some hydraulic pump, and McMaster doesn't have M5 bolts (cap head screws) that are longer than about 60mm. I would really appreciate any help on this. My alternator doesn't need a rebuild yet, and I don't want to buy a new or rebuilt one. |

Subscribing with great interest.....I snapped a couple of mine while working on my fan polishing project. Thought I'd move on to the shroud. After snapping two bolts I quit.

Give up! Used is the only way I got any. Warren is correct in that you can get a bolt in that length, but the problem is that, inevitably, the shank won't have enough threads. If you post a WTB ad in the classifieds, some generous soul may sell you some used ones. I did this and had good luck.

Preston, I just spoke to Richard at dcAutomotive (dismantler in Rocky Mount NC). He said if you shipped him one of your broken bolts with some thread left on it, he should be able to match it for you. Let us know if you have any luck. I have not tried yet locally but will probable end up back at dc.

I just edited my earlier post to show threaded rod rather than Allen bolts ... The rear half of the alternator housing is threaded ... that is why you need bolts with a long threaded area. Threaded rod should work fine ... just install a washer and hex nut where the head of the screw was originally! I suggest anti-sieze compound on any screw or rod during reassembly. |

I just ordered some "M5x105" bolts that are spare parts for some sort of pneumatic device from somewhere on the west coast. I have *no idea* if they are really the right sort of part or not, but they were cheap, so we'll find out. I'll let people know if they are the right stuff.

Take one to a local alternator/starter rebuilder and see what they have in their junk pile. They are not that uncommon...
