What kind of shocks do I have?
 

I have a 1974 911 Carrera. I have checked each of the catalogues for which shocks I have but I can not tell.

The front are black I think. They have a single bolt on the top (into the body) with a huge washer. At the bottom it appears the shock rests in a craddle, or that the shock could be loosened on the side of the shock (simular to bike seat fitting, where you loosen the side bolt and slide the seat off the post) If that's how it comes off then the craddle would be a part of the front suspension?

In the rear, the shocks are orange with a single bolt on the top w/ a washer again. On the bottom of the rear shock there is a loop w/ a bushing and a large bolt mounted 90 degrees to the axis of the shock.

Anyone know what type these are? What does everyone reccommend for replacement? I have only used the car for the street but may do driver's ed when the car is up to snuff.

Hi Mark!

It sounds like you have Koni's in the rear. And, perhaps Boge's in front, but there is only one way to tell for sure ... and that is to clean the lower portion, say the bottom 6" of the tubes, with Windex or some spray household cleaner, and then look for the stamped mfr name and part number, and maybe a 'date code' like '5 74' to specifically identify what came on your car. The front strut will have a cap nut with external threads if Boge was the OEM supplier (but there could be replacement cartridges inside) and internal threads if Koni or Bilstein. The rear shocks are completely conventional, so if not original, they could be anything! Good luck, and let us know what you find!
