Upgrade 2.7L to what max. engine size??

Hello everyone. Just wanted to get some insight from you folks that have any knowledge of upgrading a 2.7L engine to a bigger one. What, if any, are the modifications necessary to complete the upgrade? Is it better to just simply purchase another 3.0L or up rebuildable engine and completely rebuild it, or should i go this route of upgrading my 2.7? Thanks everyone.

I have just completed a couple of months of research on this very topic. My conclusion is that a 3.0 is the best long term answer. A few reasons are that you can rebuild a 2.7 with modern components, and have a strong motor; the problem comes from the magnesium case still having problems down the road. A 3.0 is very easy to upgrade, does not have the problems of the 2.7 case, and with the Carrera chain tensioners, seems to be the most durable of the 911 engines with moderate upgrades. Additionally, your getting and extra .3 liters of displace meant along with the added reliability.

I sold my 2.7 for $5K and bought a strong 3.0 for $5,500 and am adding the hydrolic chain tensioners. I am going to port the heads a little and use the existing aftermarket cams. For little money, I hope to have increased my power and have a motor that removes those little doubts from the back of my mind that a 2.7 promoted. I'll make a post once the work is done...

My "Opinion"

Replace the 2.7 with a 3.6. There are a lot of 3.6 engines available that can be picked up for around $6000 (with brain, harness, engine, coil packs)...you will need a different pressure plate, clutch, flywheel (you would need for any conversion you do...why not go with lightened flywheel and high performance clutch and pp anyways), oil cooler, heat exchanger ducts and fan, throttle cable configuration, engine tin, exhaust...

But, you will end up with a significant hp increase (and a reliable engine which can be punched even higher) in an already light car...

Even a 3.0 is not a "bolt in". Any transplant will require custom fabrication. the nice thing about the 3.6 conversions is that a lot of them have been done, a lot of lessens learned.

I have put a 3.6, a C2 turbo 3.3, and an early 3.3 in early cars and have been exremely happy with the results (I did most of the work myself!). Personally, I would not spend the money building a 2.7 or even a 3.0...sell it as it is and by a 3.2, 3.6, or 3.3. End of day, you will be money ahead.
