Essential 911 tools

I want to put together a small toolkit to keep in the trunk. Does anyone have a list of tools they couldn't live without? What size wrenches and sockets should I have. What else should I keep in it? Which type of whiskey in little airline bottles should be in it?

Two 13mm open ends for when my shift linkage slips in rush hour traffic.

Factory tool kit plus a complete set of open end/box combination metric wrenches. That will usually get you to a shop where there are sockets and air tools.

10mm combination wrenches and sockets. flat head screw driver, philips head screw driver. Small set of allens, metric of course. Add a wire cutters, crimpers and some connectors for emergency repairs. Maybe even a few feet of wire.

Search traveling. We did a few threads on what to take on a trip. Of course, the cell phone was on the list many times over.

I bought a tool kit at Lowe's that was labeled "Auto Tools." Mostly a bunch of fair quality tools and a few surprises. Like a couple of hose clamps and a few fuses. Not a lot of anything, but enough to supplement the factory tool kit. Yes, it has metric. I take this to the track with me along with some specialty tools that I have conjured up a list for. If it gets any worse than what I can fix with this set up, .....cell phone.

Or look for Tyson....

10mm, 13mm, and 19mm, and you can almost disassemble the entire car. Add a screwdriver and some duct tape, and you'll probably be fine.

What relays and fuses are good to have?

I have the factory tool kit minus the wrenches.

OK so:
8, 9, 10, 13, 15, 17, 19 sockets and wrenches
multibit screwdriver
set of metric allen wrenches
wire cutter, connectors, wire
small and large crescent wrenches
a couple different kinds of pliers
a foot of fuel line
misc clamps
duct tape
zip ties
Jack Daniels

How's that sound?

Good point. The two sizes you'll most likely need to "double up"
are 13 & 10mm. I'd suggest that, plus sizes 7 thru 19 combo wrenches as a base starting point.

Does the 911 have any 11, 12, 14, 16, 18mm bolts? I figured if it doesn't have them why put them in my emergency tool kit.

The factory tool kit is amazingly good. You can do a ton of work with it. I never needed anything else. I figure anything that I can't do with the factory tool kit I need to do someplace else. Just make sure it's complete. Like Zeke said, check for other threads on what to take when you travel. There have been some extensive threads for what to carry when you travel that would include spares, etc...

Only tangentially related, something to have at home
KD Tools 12pc Metric GearWrench Flex Head Ratcheting Combination Wrench Set (8mm to 19mm)

The KD gearwrenches are great, you get fairly fine teeth, and the flex heads can be really helpful. The only time you would want a regular combination wrench might be in a really, really tight space.

Cool Basic Tool Kit...

WD40 or Blaster
Duc Tape
Coat Hanger Wire

If it moves and should not, use the Duc Tape and Coat Hanger wire to anchor in place.

If it does not move but should, spray liberally with the WD40 or
Blaster!

Good luck!

One more: Some metric Allen wrenches. If you have CIS, then from 3mm on up. You won't use them all, but they don't take up much space. You'll soon learn which you can leave home.

Fonz,

With your EFI ... I suggest a good DMM with port for logging to a PC, and a portable scope with PC cable and screen plotting capability wouldn't hurt, either! Also, a CMOS-capable logic probe would be good for troubleshooting, too.
