Steering Wheel Change

I have purchased a 380mm, 3 point steering wheel out of a '75 Carrera. I want to install it to replace the factory 400mm, 2 point steering wheel on my '74 Coupe. What tools are required to remove the 2 point wheel and replace it with the 3 point wheel? Has anyone out there done this swap? I've been told this is a very common swap; I hope it's a simple one, too. My main obstacle is removing the 2 point horn pad without damaging it.

Thanks;
Ventana

No problem, just pull the horn pad off it should pop off without any issues. Once off remove the horn wire and make sure it doesn't touch ground. I believe you will need a 22mm ? socket to remove the nut. Once removed pull the wheel off and replace with your new wheel. Should take no more than five to ten minutes.
Make sure your wheels are straight and I would mark the position of the old steering wheel with a grease pencil so you can line up the new one.

Good luck.

Thanks for the fast reply. You say "pull the wheel". Does pulling the wheel from the splined shaft require a steering wheel puller or will it lift right off? My only experience with pulling a steering wheel was years ago on my '48 Ford Pick Up and I stripped out a rented steering wheel puller because the splines on the shaft were rusted. Should I expect the same?

you shouldn't need a puller. You might have to wriggle and pull a bit but it should come out without too much trouble. You will find that the splines are lubed.

Hey Guys;
Got a chance to change out the steering wheels today and it went just like you all said it would. Took me longer to drive my pickup to town and purchase a 27mm, 1/2" drive deep socket to remove the nut than it did to change out the wheels. Also, my nose remains undamaged. The new, 380mm wheel looks sharp, feels more comfortable and makes it easier to get my fat arse in and out of the drivers seat.
Thanks;
Ventana
