Play in axle shafts??
Had a bit of clunking (repeated clunks ?2/sec?) yesterday, both while accelerating / decelerating. However no noise in corners or while coasting in neutral, or at constant speed, or for that matter Today under all circumstances!!!
After reading the archives it looks like the CV is the likely culprit, as it comes from one side predominantely. I jacked up the rear and there is no play in the wheel in the in and out direction but some play when turning forwad then backwards. Same thing when I grabbed the axle shaft, car on ground, and my question is how much is ok??? The axle move only 1/2 mm or so but makes a noise at each end of it's play. Any suggestions to diagnose the CV further / other likely fault??? Thanks Jean-Paul with a 85 3.2 |

There isn't supposed to be any axial play in CV-joints, so it is most definitely time to remove the axles and disassemble the CV's, clean and assess the damage level.
If you don't mind looking at a couple of articles intended for VW Buses, but of high quality and that have some great pics of damaged Lobro's, take a look at these: http://www.type2.com/bartnik/cvjoints.htm http://volksweb.relitech.com/cvjoints.htm ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa [This message has been edited by Early_S_Man (edited 12-28-2000).] |

Hey Warren, thanks for that link. I think that was the first time I've seen the guts of a CV joint. I'm planning on cleaning and repacking my CV's this spring so I'm saving that article. I'm sure there is a lot of usefull Porsche knowledge that can be picked up from the VW world.
