Do you like my coupler??

I just finish to fabricate a shift coupler, based on a Apex U-joint, to replace the stock unit.

Hope this will help with the feeling of the shifting.

What do you think?

I'm thinking of making something similar. Could you tell us what size/end configuration joint you used?

Interesting, nice work but I wonder if it will end up with too much play in it? Keep us posted.

Did you try to install it in the car and adjust it?
I did one like that this winter and I run into the problem that the rod coming from the shifter was not going far enough and looking at your picture I think you will get the same problem. The front portion where you have the pin holding the rod is too long and the rod from the shifter will not go far enough. What it does it move the shift pattern back and when you go in 5th it doesn't go forward enough to be hold by the gate. What I did I shorten it up the most that I was able at the coupling (the portion where you have the pin) and I shorten up (cutting up) the rod from the shifter. Then I was able to adjust the shifter correctly.
By the way, nice job, it look better than mine.

Patrice,

I was not able to install it yet, but I did took the measurements to avoid this issue before fabricating. If I did the math correctly, the shift rod should be at the correct position when the rod on the couple is completely inside the shift rod.

I will let you know tomorrow. Thanks for your comment.

I went from memory on my previous post, I took a picture of mine and you might be OK. The part that goes on the transmission rod on yours seems shorter than mine. One thing for sure the shifter as less slop in it.
Here a picture of mine installs.

Yes, if you are not going to manf. these, please post all the details to make one.

Apparently, Apex U-joints are British & distributed in the US by Cooper Tools (?)
http://www.coopertools.com/catalog/pdffiles/apex/apex_uj_us.pdf

Which model did you use?

It should be easy for a machinist to modify these and make a few...

Randy,

I got it from Aircraft Spruce. The one I got is "UNIVERSAL JOINTS MS20271-B12". It is the 5/8. If I recall correctly the U-joint was $74, but I am sure you s hould be able to get if cheaper somewhere else.

Let me know if you want any more info
