H4 Euro install - almost done - questions
 

OK, I bought a set of OEM euro H4's and installed them today. They came off an 85 euro cab. My car is an 83 cab (us). The question I have is about the attachment of the deco trim (outer) rings. There is a "stud" that looks to attach the inside ring assy and serve as the threaded part for the final screw that holds on outer ring. I cannot seem to get this to screw in right. I struggled for about 30 minutes tis afternoon. No dice. I could just be a complete idiot, or not... The first picture below show the screw in question. I just used my original ring retaining screws to fasten just the inside rings on for now, until I can figure this out. Anyone else had this trouble before with the euro H4's with deco rings? Also, anyone got a couple of these special fasteners, as I think I may be missing one. The last 4 pictures are before and after's. Please excuse as the car is way dirty. Been a busy week. Honestly, the car looks a little wierd to me with these H4's on. I think it might be the wheels... who knows. Just struck me a bit funny this afternoon that after all that, they didn't just smack me with enthusiasm!

I can tell you from my experience that those screws are difficult to get in right. The angle is critical. Pay close attention and make sure the screw is approaching the nut in the headlight bucket at exactly the right angle. Also, make sure the screw threads are "clean" and not "buggered up". Test the screw fit with the headlight out first to be sure they thread in easily.

As far as your wheels are concerned, I think you need a set of Fuchs! :D

Yeah I thought the angle migt be messing things up. I could never get it started. With the light out, it seemed that angle was such that it would be next to impossible to get a screwdriver on that bugger without scratching my paint! I wondered about maybe trying to bend the tab in the bucket up a bit to see if that helped.

As far as the Fuchs go, got a deal working and hope to have them on by the end of April.:)

I also think I need to paint the trim rings to match.

Just my 2 cents, I like the H4's and I think once you paint them to match, you might like them better. And I think wheels can make a more dramatic change in car's appearance.

Nice looking cab! I like the RUF's. I am in Jackson. I'll email you when we get this put together. Was that the 993 get together you were at?

I strongly advise against bending the threaded tab in the bucket, as the fit of the headlamp assembly over the edge of the top lip of the bucket is highly critical, and many people have experienced assemblies that have fallen out and off the car ... after a bump/pothole in the road!!! Moving that tab even 1/16" upwards might be enough to make the fit unstable.

Nice car, are you planning on using relays for the headlights? You may already have but I'm not sure, if not, it seems to be recommended by a lot of people. My 2 cents.

I need to verify the wattage of the bulbs that came with them. Am I wrong in my understanding that the relay(Sucro?) is only necessary if you upgrade to higher wattage bulbs, like 100w?

I'll let the other experts answer this but it was my understanding that adding the relays was added protection regardless of bulb wattage. I could be wrong but the kit is inexpensive and releatively easy to install.

Thanks Alex. I am planning on getting one ordered. Geeze the small projects are starting to mount.

The Sucro relay is advised regardless of the headlight wattage due to the factory system always keeping a load on the switch at the dash so as not to burn out the contacts on the switch (at least that is my understand and why I bought one).

Thanks kwm... BTW, my third car (never drove the first 2 - long story) and the first one I drove was a 64 t-bird. We put a built 460 in it. It was a little scary. You could actually watch the gas needle fall down while doing donuts in a parking lot full of snow. Ouch for a teenager (gas was around $1.50 then - 1985).

Ours had a 490 big block so I fell ya on that.

OK. I had some amount of trouble, too. So here is what I did...
Hold the screw in place within the finish ring. Then while keeping the ring free, loose, away from the catch at the top, turn the screw into the hole just enough to barely get it started. Then slip the ring over the the top onto the catch and tighten the screw.
Hope this makes sense. :)
