oil pressure switch removal

can the oil pressure switch on the engine ( for the idiot light) be replaced without dropping the motor? the reason for replacement is the hand brake dash light will not go out. 81'SC

I assume you know something I don't. Perhaps the two lights are related.

At any rate, I suspect it's possible. You'd have to reach around the drivers' side of the motor, behind the big CIS air box and, near the fire wall, pretty much dead center of the motor, is the oil pressure idiot light switch. It's about as big around as a large marble with a flat connector sticking straight out the top. If you can reach it, you can change it.

I've done this a few times already on my '80 SC. I remove the rubber boot off the top of the air flow sensor part of the fuel injection, which gives me enough working room to reach my fat hands straight over the top of the engine, and down into the deep, dark recesses. It's not easy (or comfortable), but it is indeed possible. The first time I did it, I had the old switch out in about 10 minutes, but I spent over three hours getting the new one in. The space was tight, it was oily and slippery, and I dropped the switch a number of times, resulting in a bit of fishing around. And when I didn't drop the switch, I had a hard time getting the alignment just right for starting the threading process. But now I can do it much more quickly, maybe a half hour total.
