A friend of mine has a '79SC into which he put a 4.3liter Chevy V6. He has it worked out pretty well now and he likes it because he did it himself and it really gets to the purists.
The better story is how he ended up needing a new engine... Six months after he bought the car the engine starts knocking. So he buys factory manuals and starts into a rebuild with the help of an old Porsche mechanic. (An old friend of mine.) They build the engine just fine and put it the car, then one week later while driving it catches on fire! Turns out a fuel line banjo bolt backed out (left loose) and the gas ignighted somehow. He said he was driving it pretty hard so everything was as hot as it could get. His insurance totaled the car and he saw opportunity to do another custom car. (He is no stranger to engine swaps) He bought it back, cut off the Targa and installed a cabroilet kit, installed the V6 and painted it yellow with a 930 tail. He did everything but the final paint himself. It looks good and sounds strange! This isn't the swap you were asking about but I hope you enjoyed the story. The car feels very different because of the low-end torque. You can see the car at www.wildrides.com ------------------ Louis '91 C4 |

I've followed the Porchev crowd for about 20 years now. The most popular swap seems to be the 914/V8. The cars are cheap, light, and ballanced. Good for the application when structurally modified to take the power. The 914 swap also doesn't seem to bother the purists as much, probably due to the VW/F4 connection. The 911 is another story. I find that personally it is too hard to give up the sound of the flat six and the personality that it gives the car. I want the small, lightweight, exotic looks of the 930 with the cheap, raw power that only chevy can give it. The problem is I don't want it to sound like my V8/S10. That truck sounds great - for a truck (or a 'vette for that matter). I have absolutely no doubt that a V8/911 with a 930 suspension would handle every bit as good as a 930, probably better with the absense of lag and the gain of torque. Maybe a tubocharged V8 would sound better............
There is a support group for us outsiders of the cheap power persuasion. Check out www.egroups.com/group/Porschev [This message has been edited by RarlyL8 (edited 12-30-2000).] |

I don't care if folks want to put diesel engines in their Porsche. For those people, I'd suggest looking at Panteras or something.
What I'd like to see is a 911 that is tubbed wiht a big block and blower in front. Of course, the top 2/3 of the engine would stick out of the trunk. ------------------ '83 SC |

I have looked at Panteras - very seriously. They have the same problem as 'vettes and all other V8 exotics. Size. They are too big. If you want something small, tossable, and ungodly powerfull for less than $30K you are left with few options.
