aaagghh!!! My car is bleeding...

Hi Guys,

My car is leaking oil real bad from the right side of the engine. (same side as the oil filter).
It's only leaking when the engine is running and is pooring out in a very heavy stream. It basicaly dumped all it's all after about 10 mins.

I havent used my baby in over a week and it's been sub zero temps in the Uk at the moment, so Im thinking split pipe etc.., but I dont really know. It's very dark and cold outside so I havent had a good look yet. It's not making any weird noises so I dont think it's anything too serious.

Anyone got any ideas?

Im hoping it's something I can fix myself as garage bills are just not what you need after christamas!!!

Thanks, Alex.

Assuming that your car is also sub-zero in temp, all your oil hoses have shrunk (while the fittings do not) and your oil is thick creating a lot of pressure. The problem MAY go away when the car is warm. Check all the hose clamps and related fittings first, if this isn't the problem you can then freak out. My truck has sprung coolant leaks everywhere, simply due to the cold. I tightened all the hoseclams and no more leaks. I hope it is that simple for you as well.

Alex,

My suspicion is that it is one of the two pressurized oil cooler seals, fixable in the car ... but not fun, unless you like the idea of pulling the CIS system half-apart from the engine compartment!

I would suggest pulling the engine and transaxle ... then you could pull the CIS off in one piece, pop off the air shroud over the cooler, remove the oil cooler and clean it up ... and replace all of the cooler seals! Then, just for good measure, replace the O-ring on the engine thermostat!

Big project just to get at the seals ... and good time to do CV-joints, if you are so inclined!

Hi Alex,
I feel for you. I'm in the UK too and have a '75 911S 2.7. It's really cold here too (Preston, Lancs.) and I'm worried for mine. I've been using it everyday (just had an entertaining drive in heavy snow) but I'm going to be looking nervously for oil now....
Good luck....
Anthony
