planning a ball joint change..what other hardware change?
i have yet to order the balljoints, but i already have the polybronze bushings. for economy, i want to do it all at once. what else needs to go? i assume the castle nut will take a beating during removal, and will need replacement, what else? the tapered pin? maybe the nut at the end of the tapered pin? cost adds up, and i would love your advice.
thanks, cliff

Definitely replace the pins. Also you will need a special tool to tighten the castle nuts ($45 I think ouch) and it is very easy to strip. Those nuts need to be tightened to around 180 ft/lbs. so your torque wrench isn't going to do it.

Be sure to replace the wedge bolts too. I ordered everything but the castle nut tool from our host. My local AZ has the tool for ~$10, and it works perfectly with an impact.
I started with just looking at the bj's but decided to pull the entire front suspension off for cleanup etc. The a-arms, crossbar got blasted and chassis saver coated black. The Bilstein struts cleaned equally and finished yellow. I also chiseled the black crusty stuff off the shock towers and refinished some of the trunk area. With the exception of Elephant pbb's everything is still stock. jt -84 targa ![]() |

If you will be doing front PB bushings on the A arms, then why not just pull both of them and put them in your other car, then truck on down to your nearest Porsche mechanic and have him remove them for you and install the new ones?
I've read lots of horror stories about getting these babies in and out, so just avoided the whole business by having someone with the proper tool do it in about 5 min. on the bench. Install turbo tie rods and new front sway bar bushings while you're in there. The wedge bolts are a must, and struts would be nice as well. Good luck, ianc

Instead of the Porsche tool, I found this at my local auto parts store. It is made for pulling some sort of driveshaft parts off...
It was $19. Although it is slightly oversize, it worked well with a 1/2-inch impact air tool. ![]()

Doing my Ball joints because I am adding a front fender oil cooler. While I am in there I decided to clean up the entire area. Struts are out and all taken apart. Powder coated everything that I could. Installing new shocks, b-joints and t-rods. The tool for the ball joints is a must for easy removal. I started with PB and heat, the hammer and chisel, then the large pipe wrench and then bought the tool from our host. Easy as can be.

I used a pipe wrench on ball joints.
