One reason 911s have always drawn attention...
The evolution is so gradual, you're never out of style.
A perfect 914 will command more attention than most of the 911s you see on the road, but every 911 looks like a 911! In spotting a 911, you cannot tell SC or 3.2 Carreras without noting the rear badge. That's a good thing. From 20 yards back, I can't tell a 964 from a 3.2 Carrera--I have to be right up on it and notice the slightly different rear bumpers. Then I ask, "why the hell did you tone down the flaring on those things guys? Jesus...you took half the coolness out of em" And this trend is capped by the 993, the car I've declared the bestest, coolest, rockinest 911 ever made. But if a guy has a 996, then I can NEVER tell if it's a boxter or a 911 until I reach into the glove compartment and grab the Owner's Manual. ------------------ Kurt B 1984 911 Carrera Cabriolet 75 914 1.8 [This message has been edited by Kurt B (edited 12-31-2000).] |

I drove a 993 last weekend, for about 150 miles. Oh, man, a wide body 2S model!
My next car will be a 993!! I've driven most every 911 from 1970 on up. I really think that overall, the 993 is the best one ever made. The 2S, with its wide body and rear wheel drive, is AWESOME! Yes, its very different from the early cars, or the SCs/Carreras, but you can't expect P to not move forward. The 993 made my very, very nice SC feel like an antique! I also think that history will agree with me. I think that, especially given its very short production history, the 993 will become very sought after by enthusiasts in the next 10-20 years. It is a car that does the almost impossible: It is modern, yet retains the Porsche "magic," which I think is gone in the current line and may never return. |
