Optima Battery install w/pics
Made the switch to an optima battery yesterday, chose this battery because they dont leak and cause corrosion. The installation method, I got from This post.
Used the same battery and mounting material (only mine is black with gold sparkles). Its really an easy job, and leaves a little extra room in the trunk, where I will keep an extra qt of oil and funnel. Here are a few before, during and after pics: Old and new  Mounting plate (from wal-mart)  optima in place

Looks great KC, That's a really nice mounting plate from Walmart. That's actually the first time I've said nice and walmart in the same sentence. Hope everything is good with you and your family. Duke Edit- one question though, Is there only one bolt holding it all? Kinda scary if so, especially in the event of a sudden stop. I just went back and looked at the original post and see where it fits into the original hold down also. Seems to be good enough.

Hey Duke, good to hear from you.
Yes, only one bolt, the other end of the mounting plate fits under the factory battery mount, so it can't move. there are no modifications to the body of the car, I did replace the allen head bolt with a hex head but that's all.

What is the mounting plate made of? And where did you find it at Walmart? Auto section?

Just got done replacing my 3-1/2 year old optima in my 79 sc. Free replacement if it fails within 3 years, wouldn't you know it. Mine would not hold a charge and the guy at Autozone said it was trashed. Really dissapointed, especially considering the fact that the price went up about 40 bucks since I bought the original. I think laying the battery up for the winter is not good for the cells. You need to use these things continuously. If you do take your car off the road for the winter say, periodically put a load on it and recharge it with a trickle charger.
Good luck and nice installation. Did you get the high torque starter that the host sells also? Just ordered mine.

I have to agree with Duke - that's nice, and it came from Wal-Mart (I'm in Wal-Mart country now - Rogers, AR). Of course, I'm here because of Wal-Mart, so I can't complain too much!
I will definitely check it out in person sometime. I really like the way it looks, and of course, I like that it frees up some trunkspace. Thanks for the PM KC... Later, Mike

I don't know if you're kidding or not but that's the cutting board mounting system I was talking about this weekend. It looked easier than tracking down the aluminum. By the way, no one in Columbia had an Optima. I'm going to have to order one.

Not to rain on the optima parade, but just this weekend I had mine charged at interstate batteries as is was drained from sitting for a couple months. While it was out I was cleaning under there and noticed that it left battery residue all over the battery box. I think if came from the vents on the top. Any way it left more residue than the old lead acids ever did. I had it mounted on it's side, in the driver's side box of a 72 targa. I'm looking for a way to fit it in upright. I might also look into an odyssey battery.

You may want to try the Marine Battery (yellow top). I've never had a problem mounting it in any position (yes...ha, ha, ha) with no leakage. -Matt

OK.......... this is the top secret plastic cutting board mounting system (I cant believe I let the cat out of the bag). It's located in the housewares section of wal-mart. It actually fits very tightly in the battery attachment points of the 911. The thickness of the board is a perfect fit.
Again this is not my idea or design it same from others on this board, and again Pelican comes through for the DIY GUY

Very timely post KC. I just wrestled the monster battery out of my Targa and charged it and then wrestled it back in. The whole time I'm thinking I've got to get a smaller battery. Thanks for the tip and hope all is well.
