Opinions/Experiences with a Monty Muffler ???
Has anyone used a Monty SS muffler? Trying to decide on a stainless muffler for my 911SC with SSI's.

I havn't heard much, good or bad, regarding teh Montey. But I believe the best performance is with a pre-74 OEM muffler. That what I am going with on mine.

Eric, I have heard good feedback about them. They may somewhat louder then stock, but more free flowing. Try the single outlet if sound volume is an issue.

I know this topic has been addressed several times, but I would be interested in recent opinions. Is it necessary to go to a high $ unit to get the performance and sound ( fabspeed, GHL etc.) without the worry of spliting the unit and or being too loud. Are there equally as good alternatives without the $900 price tags.
I have been waiting several months to install my SSIs because I can't stomach that kind of money for a muffler. Especially when most of what I read sounds like hype. Jeff C 81 SC [This message has been edited by Jcon (edited 01-01-2001).] |

Jeff,
Most of what you've been reading IS HYPE!!! Get a $199 OEM '65-'73 muffler and be happy with both the sound and power, or a $299 AJ-USA sport muffler for an extra 10-12 hp, and a bit more noise! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

I was able to find some good quality used mufflers. The "sport" modified stock muffler, two s/s tips in the middle and the stock driver side welded closed, provided good power with the ssi. But it had an annoying resonance in the mid range.
Found a used B&B dual outlet. About the same volume but different tone and no resonance.... YMMV |

I had a dual outlet Monty on my SC running SSIs. The outlets were 4 inchers - - I finally took it off because of the noise - it was great on the track but a but rough around town. Been looking for an inexpensive two-in/two-out with reasonable noise. I need for the outlets to be side mounted rather than center mounted a-la VW Abarth etc. Also, I now have an empty hole in my valance on the right hand side. Need to put a pipe in there!

I am the one who bought Chuck's Stainless Monty setup with the dual 4" outlets...and it is by far the best money I have spent. The sound is incomparible to anything this side of a V12 Ferrari. There is actually a spot at about 4k rpm where it is somewhat quiet. The rest is blissfull cacophony. This lovely noise is accentuated by the Webers, the 7300 rpm redline, and a total lack of sound deadning.
Needless to say, people turn their heads. Still, it is positively silent compared to full race systems. Throw away your stereo and listen to the real music. ------------------ |

Don't know anything about them on an SC, but I would caution against using them on a mechanically injected car, unless Monty has redone them in the last couple years.
My buddy bought one for his beautiful '73 S, and it would never run right with the muffler. He would switch it out for the stock muffler, and it would run fine. That thing ended up being a beautiful paperweight for his garage, though! He asked Bruce Anderson about it. Anderson theorized that it simply was not tuned right for MFI. They even experimented by tack-welding a Supertrapp on the end of it (the theory being that it did not have enough backpressure), but it didn't seem to be a backpressure problem, but instead a tuning problem. Have any of you ever heard of someone taking a stock pre-74 two-in, one-out (side) muffler and cutting a hole in the right side to weld on another outlet like the one on the left side? Just curious. A stock muffler with a couple of 3 or 4" in diameter stainless tips, one welded on either side, would sure look great and be VERY easy on the wallet!!
Let me know. Nick. ------------------ __________ Nick Shumaker 1982 911SC Coupe |

With AJUSA sport muffler, your going to have to alter your rear fairing for later cars. Instead of coming out the side, they shoot strait out the back in the area of your license plate, unless they show a diffent one from the ones I see in the catalog.

Thanks to all for the suggestions.
77/67S, you sound to be of the same spirit as myself. I just pulled out the radio today. No more beautiful music than a flat six! As far as the noise goes, this is not a daily driver; just my fun car. I can live with a louder exhaust. Anyone have a good source for SSI's? |
