Need for Speed - Texas Style
To all you top-end, high power junkies out there! You'all have probably heard of the Pony Express - a high MPH closed course event run on public roads. The object is to run the ~90 mile course at an average speed matching that of the class you are entered. Kind of like top end bracket racing. Anyway, I got a note from the American Road Rally Association inviting our local PCA to the Big Bend Open Poad Race on April 4-7, 2001. The race will be run on US Hwy 285 between Ft.Stockton and Sanderson, TX, a distance of 59 miles each way. Clubs can compete between themselves and other clubs. Classes range from 85mph to 185mph and unlimited. If any one is interested I can give you the info for contact. BTW - the unlimited class has been owned for the last decade by a supercharged Pantera that averages better than 220mph!
So strap on that extra Carrera cooler and blast over to Texas! And Warren - get rid of those 7:31 gears! HA HA HA !!!! |

Here's a link for more info from last year's Big Bend run. As they say in that part of the world, "It's not the end of the earth, but if you stood on a milk crate you could see it from there!" Nice and wide-open!

And how thoughtful of them to hold it out in Warren's neck of the woods (well, ok, desert)-now we've all got yet another reason to make it to his party! You ARE having the party, aren't you, Warren?

Hey Rarly. I was looking for a spring road trip. I am not ready to run it yet, but is it a viewable event. I have to keep on with all the little fixes and then do some DE to learn how to drive a 911 fast before I would run it. I feel much more comfortable on two wheels when the fun dial is pegged. Has anyone of the pelican bunch run this one or the silverstate?

Dave - this weather is absolutely killing me! I've never gone more than a month without driving the car. Today makes 5 weeks. I got the car out and drove around the driveway. We've got about a foot of snow and it hasn't been above freezing for two weeks. I don't know how much more I can take.
The Pony Express is a must-do before I die deal. I can't do it yet because of family, but the first chance I get it WILL happen. What a thrill that has got to be. I doubt if I get the chance to play spectator first, too much time involved. My 'vette friend used to haul cars across the country and still has axcess to a multi-car hauler. The plan is to load 'em up, head out, observe for a day or so, then hit it. If they break we haul 'em back. It may be a few years before this comes true, time well spent learning how to drive by doing DE events! Near top end for 100 miles of high speed curves is tough on a car! |

Maybe I can sweet talk my girlfriend into running her new 500SL in the touring division. I would hope the big benz could run a ton coast to coast with no problem That would be a nice escape form this cold stuff (it's chicago and it still might be snowing then) and a way to learn a bit at 100mph before really going for it in the turbo. I checked the silverstate website and they are sold out for 01 and taking reservations for 02. Would you believe a Chrysler Lebaron has the course record at 207.7
Thinking warm thoughts and dreaming of a 210mph turbo cab david |
