Building a 2.7 RSR Replica...which mirrors should I be using?
Hi...I need to figure out the right mirrors for my RSR replica. I hate the stock '69 mirrors...close to useless. Which are the correct ones to use?
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1173639922.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1173640246.jpg Ok, so this one's a little gratuitous. It's just nice to see it out of the garage in the light, even in it's current state. Just wait til I get it done, and painted. It will be Jack Olsen revisited. ;) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1173640359.jpg |
gratuitous pics are the best kind. I think you need the unpainted flag mirrors. would you like to sell your useless mirrors? drop me a pm, Don.

touring, light-wt. or race model?
you'll never find the thin sheet metal or glass to do this as a true replica... You are going to need a copy of Konradsheim's book for your project. A fellow Pelican was kind enough to post my summary files that may provide you some helpful info & list of sources here: http://www.penaltykicker.com/911/data/ |
@ Don:
Thanks for the info. And yes, Don, I'd love to sell you my useless mirrors. I haven't the foggiest idea of their value (good for you, I guess). The passenger side glass is cracked though. @ Randy: Well...I should qualify this. It's not a "replica", per se. I mean, I'm not running fuchs or anything. But, I would consider some newer style mirrors. Flag mirrors you say? |
'74-'75 chrome manual mirrors like Jack O. has.

emptyo, just shoot me a couple of pics when you get them off and we'll figure something out. not too concerned about the crack as I only run a driver's anyway. I've got these if you would be interested in a trade. regards, Don.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1173643363.jpg

I started with the smaller 1973-style polished flag mirrors (with an aftermarket reproduction of the same size on the passenger side). Then I switched to the 74-75 style, which is similar in design but slightly larger. I didn't think the smaller rectangle ones provided enough visiblity. The right side one seemed useless.
The round ones are also bad for real-world visibility, in my opinion. (They're good for aero, though.) |
+1
|
Well, I'm not too worried about "aero" for time trials and autocross, but I love to be able to see. Were you able to locate the passenger side mirror in a way you can actually use it?
|
Don, I thnk I'm going to go with the other mirrors, but I'll happily sell you mine.
|
Part of the reason the mirrors on your 69 are so useless if because the right side mirror is mounted in the wrong location. The mirrors are supposed to be in different spots on each side, because the A pillar blocks the view of the passenger side mirror. When someone "upgraded" your car with a 2nd mirror on the passenger side, they must have used the same mounting location as the drivers side, which is incorrect. It's a pretty common mistake, my car has the same thing from a PO.
|
Right.
Still, I'd go with the chrome flags that Jack has, since you are building a real RS "replica" -- just a fun car in 'Rgruppe' mod mode. It may be cheaper to find some BMW mirrors in a junkyard - only the stem is a tad different. They were used on either the 320 or the great 2002... |
@ Klauke:
You're absolutely right. I can't even see the passenger side mirror from the cockpit. It's hilarious. I'll start the process of trying to find the flag mirrors from 74-75. Thanks all. |
pm sent, Don.

Here's an odd question...are these (The 74-75 mirrors) bolt on? Or do I need to modify my early doors somehow?
